I pitched this article to 2 publications that always respond to me. Neither did. I've NEVER seen editors so clearly afraid to publish something before. A billionaire's legal threats will let her get away with Holocaust denial (yet again)

Strong correlation between Americans who talk about the importance of herd immunity (for vaccines) and Americans who free-ride on herd immunity (for gun ownership as deterrence against home invasion)

TIL that France’s property tax system is even more generationally cursed than Californias Prop 13. (Ontario fwiw has had them frozen for a decade now, something we have to change.) - Property tax valuations/assessments frozen at 1970 values - Revaluations based on renovations have disincentivized improving homes - Capital gains taxes only charged on young people (basically) - Property taxes higher on poorer and younger places Obviously this isn’t as generationally horrifying as the French pension system. But these dynamics are real across the western world, and if we don’t grapple with their unfairness, I’m not sure how we get through the next few decades. We’ve saddled the young with too many bills they cannot afford to pay. theborys.substack.com/p/how-…

My hot take on the sex offender registry is that it's stupid. Either someone is dangerous enough to be locked up or they're not. The middle ground is dumb. Put them on a long probation with special terms if they need it. Also, why do we have statutory rapists and public pissers on the list?
There's been some discussion about the sex offender registry recently. Personally I don't see why there should be any need for it πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Frankly, this is how moving the Overton window is supposed to work and why it's imperative for the left to pressure left electeds, despite what DSA rightists/Progs say. If Mamdani becomes "the consensus center" then you've just moved the Dem party leftward. That's the point.

once again, the leopards-eating-people's-faces meme is not 'I recklessly / naively / foolishly enabled something that hurt me!' it is 'I enabled something that I knowingly expected to hurt other people, and it hurt ME!'

LASD now has a new dashboard up tracking CCW permit issuance. Probably part of their settlement with USDOJ. A weird number of withdrawn applications. Wonder if those are from people who gave up after a long wait and didn't see the email/call finally scheduling them for an interview (if you don't respond, after a while the application is treated as withdrawn I believe). The dashboard claims they are approving permits within a month now. Quite a change from the two years when we filed CRPA v. LASD!

Some people think that Learned Hand had the perfect name for a judge. But "Learned" was the judge's middle name, not his first name. Hand's real first name was better suited for a lawyer: Billings.

Actually a fan of this take, because it forces people to logically conclude that everyone who opposes Mamdani from a direction other than the left is, categorically, a right winger

unfathomable damage done to America. You could have abundant, cheap, emission-free electricity flowing to your home right now if it weren't for these people.
Ralph Nader, 1997: β€œWhen we came out against nuclear power in the early '70s, the government had predicted that there would be 1,000 nuclear plants by the year 2000 in the United States, and there's 109 and shrinking, as more and more get shut down.” pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline…

Your daily reminder that the Jones Act is terrible policy, and Trump suspending it is a big factor in why his tariffs haven't plunged the U.S. into a full-blown recession. He basically paused one terrible policy to partially make up for the effects of his own terrible policy.

Onion πŸ‘ pricesπŸ‘ are πŸ‘ artificially πŸ‘ volatile πŸ‘ due πŸ‘ to πŸ‘ the πŸ‘ ban πŸ‘ on πŸ‘ futures πŸ‘ UNBAN THE UNION FUTURE
University of Chicago Students to Protest at Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Demand End to Federal Ban on Onion Futures Student-led group For Our Futures will rally Monday morning to call for repeal of the 1958 Onion Futures Act On Monday, October 19, at 8:30 a.m., members of For Our Futures, a student-led organization from @UChicago, will gather outside the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (@CMEGroup) headquarters to demand the repeal of the Onion Futures Act of 1958, a nearly 70-year-old federal law prohibiting futures trading in onions. The Onion Futures Act, enacted following allegations of market manipulation in the 1950s, singled out onions for a prohibition on futures contracts that remains in effect today. For Our Futures is calling on Congress to repeal the ban and restore the ability of onion growers, buyers, and traders to participate in a regulated futures market. Onions remain the only commodity banned from futures trading in the United States. The protest will feature a giant inflatable onion costume, protest signs, and dozens of students, and will take place outside the headquarters of CME Group, one of the world's largest derivatives marketplaces and the historic center of American onion futures trading. Yes the French have a more developed sustained semi-riot protest culture than us but I feel ppl have memoryholed the fact that ICE deployments were not taken lightly and that the President deployed the Marines to our second largest city to counter protests
What’s even more pathetic is that most of these American protesters are old people. The French youth are rising up against their government while the American youth seem to not give a shit about anything.

Fun fact: The feds can throw you in prison for 5 years if they catch you distilling spirits in your own home. It's not about safety. It's about tax revenue. Should you spend more time in prison for making vodka than many people do for violent assault?
In a boost for those who want to make whiskey in their bathtubs or gin in their kitchens, the Supreme Court announces it will consider whether to strike down a long-standing federal ban on distilling spirits at home. nbcnews.com/politics/supreme…
