Gentleman came up to me after my last speaking gig & said:
-I'm 56
-I've only ever farmed with Dad since high school
-I really don't own much but my pickup
-I have no idea what happens to the farm when Dad passes
-Growing up I heard, "work hard & it will be yours some day"
-But comments over the last few years makes me wonder
-Whenever I try to bring it up, he shuts down
--> I feel trapped.
This isn't the first story like that I've heard.
Truly, I feel badly for him.
I guess this brings up 2 thoughts:
To the owner generation, please complete a transition plan AND communicate it with the next gen.
Whether they agree with it or not, I think it's only fair they're in the loop.
To the successor generation, start building equity in your own assets & operation early on to gain independence.
That way you're not trapped or beholden later in life.
Clear, open, honest communication is a good thing.
