As the country prepares for the development of the Ksh 2 trillion Dangote East Africa Refinery project, the Port of Lamu welcomed MV Da Yang carrying heavy construction materials that will be utilized in the project. Laden with 2,930 metric tons of heavy machinery, the arrival of MV Da Yang sets the stage for the anticipated groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the first ever oil refinery north of Kenya planned for next week. The refinery will process crude oil from Lokichar in Turkana County, and other parts of East and southern Africa and beyond, before supplying refined petroleum products to regional markets. The port of Lamu will play a central role through supporting marine operations and handling petroleum tankers thereby boosting the Port’s operations. Kenya Ports Authority PLC Chief Executive Officer Captain William Ruto welcomed the maiden vessel and successfully brought it alongside before presenting a certificate of first call and a plaque to the vessel’s master Captain Wang Shengli. Captain Ruto said the vessel’s arrival was significant to the refinery project and demonstrated the Government’s commitment to ensuring its success. “The arrival of this vessel is very critical and shows the Government’s commitment to ensuring this project succeeds. It will be a game changer for the entire region,” said Captain Ruto. He assured shipping partners and customers that the Port of Lamu is fully prepared to handle current and future cargo volumes, with KPA committed to efficient vessel turnaround, seamless cargo operations and customer-focused services that meet international standards.

This morning, I inspected the progress of the ongoing upgrade works at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, being undertaken under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence ahead of the 20th October Mashujaa Day celebrations, which will be jointly hosted by Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet Counties. Preparations for this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations in Eldoret are gathering pace, with the Ministry of Defence stepping up oversight of the ongoing works, which now stand at 69% complete, with key components of the stadium taking shape. The inspection provided an opportunity to assess progress on the ground, address emerging challenges and reaffirm the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that the facility is delivered to the required standards and within the set timelines. As the countdown to Mashujaa Day continues, we remain focused on delivering a modern sporting facility that will serve not only as the venue for this year’s national celebrations, but also as a lasting legacy for the people of the region and the country at large.
