"Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821 and officially abolished slavery in 1829." People often use this to claim Mexico was morally superior to America. The reality? The president who abolished it was overthrown by his own VP and executed by a firing squad in 1831. The original architects of the movement, Miguel Hidalgo and José María Morelos, were executed too. Laws on paper meant very little when the political system still had systemized debt peonage which put hundreds of thousands of Indigenous workers in lifelong forced labor on haciendas in places like Yucatán and Oaxaca. Or the continued genocide & forced labor of groups like the Yaqui.
