In honour of National Dog Week, we are re-sharing our scheme for improving the standards of welfare for our canine friends. Our proposal sets out a clear path towards stronger protections for dogs across the UK - including a centralised microchip and DNA database to ensure greater accountability, traceability, and enforcement. This week, whilst we celebrate the joy dogs bring, SB4G are renewing our call for the reforms they deserve. 🐕 #NationalDogWeek #DogWelfare #PolicyForChange #DogsDeserveBetter

What happens to your dog's microchip record if the company holding it suddenly closes? In September, the reported closure of a private microchip database company raised an important question about how secure and reliable our current system really is. The microchip itself doesn't stop working, but if the contact details linked to it become inaccessible, reuniting a lost dog with their owner could become much more difficult. The UK has now introduced a Single Point of Search, which is a welcome step. But it searches across separate databases rather than holding every dog's record in one central place. At Stop Breed for Greed, we believe there should be one, secure, lifelong record for each individual dog that follows them from breeder to every change of keeper. A properly managed centralised system could help make records more consistent, improve traceability and reduce the risk of important information being lost if an individual company closes. A dog's record should be there for life, not dependent on whether a private company stays in business. Every dog deserves a system that protects them throughout their life. 💚 #MakeChipsCount #ResponsibleDogOwnership

Could One Dog, One Record help prevent repeat abuse? A confidential database could flag reports of domestic abuse involving animals and animal-abuse convictions, helping prevent people breeding, owning or adopting pets while keeping victims’ details private. #OneDogOneRecord #SB4G #animalwelfare #makechipscount

On Tuesday, SB4G attended an important #APDAWG event at Westminster exploring the links between domestic abuse and animal abuse. We heard heartbreaking stories, but also incredible courage from survivors and campaigners, including those behind Ruby’s Law and Holly’s Law. Pets can be used as a means of control, making it even harder for someone to leave an abusive relationship. Their safety must be part of the conversation too. Thank you to @APDAWG1 for bringing this important issue to light. 💜 #rubyslaw #hollyslaw

Are you with Track Your Paws?
🆘UK COMPLIANT MICROCHIP DATABASE CEASES TRADING🆘 ‘Track Your Paws’ microchip database does not meet Defra Government standards and has been removed from the list of compliant databases. If your pet's details are registered with Track Your Paws, you should register with another database from the list. You can find out which database you are on by using the microchip number checker on this link: check-a-chip.co.uk The UK’s now 24 compliant pet microchip databases charge inconsistent fees, from free to £6–£20 one-off payments to tiered subscriptions. Microchipping is an important part of responsible pet ownership, helping lost pets find their way home. But the cost of updating details varies between databases, with some charging fees that could discourage people from keeping records up to date.

Imagine your dog (or cat) is stolen, only for the microchip database company to contact you because someone else is trying to register themselves as the keeper. Under the current rules, that can happen - even when the microchip company has already been told your pet is missing or stolen. That surely has to change. We need a system that protects pet owners and makes it much harder for stolen pets to be re-registered without consent. Please sign and share this important petition. And don’t forget to verify your signature using the email you receive - otherwise your signature won’t count. We must close this loophole and do better for stolen pets 🐾 petition.parliament.uk/petit…

We believe anything that helps keep pets safe and improves the chances of reuniting lost animals with their families deserves serious consideration. This petition calls on the Government to require all pet microchip databases to allow owners and keepers to update their contact details free of charge.

The Responsible Dog Ownership Taskforce report has recognised something important: we need a whole-system approach. Its 20 recommendations cover data, enforcement, education and training - while also highlighting the need to consider wider animal welfare policy, including dog breeding. That's exactly why we believe the conversation cannot begin and end with the owner holding the lead. Every dog starts with a breeder. A responsible system should know where that dog came from, who is responsible for it now and what happens throughout its lifetime. That's the thinking behind Stop Breed for Greed. Not anti-breeder. Not anti-breeding. Just better accountability. #ResponsibleDogOwnership #DogWelfare #ResponsibleBreeding

On this World Animal Day, let's remember that animals depend on us to make good decisions for them. They don’t get to choose who breeds them, who buys them, where they live or what happens when things go wrong. That’s why our focus at Stop Breed for Greed has always been bigger than just breeding. We want to see a system where responsible breeding and responsible ownership go hand in hand - with better information, better support, proper traceability and accountability when things go wrong. Because every dog deserves a good start in life. And every dog deserves for the people around them to take responsibility for getting it right. Every dog starts with a breeder. Every dog matters 💚 #WorldAnimalDay #DogWelfare #ResponsibleBreeding #ResponsibleDogOwnership

Dogs don't live in separate policy boxes. The Responsible Dog Ownership Taskforce report recognises that responsible dog ownership is complex and involves government, enforcement agencies, animal welfare organisations, educators, the pet industry, owners and breeders. Its recommendations span data, enforcement, education and training - because no single intervention can solve every problem. We believe breeding must be part of that conversation too. From the moment a dog is bred to every change of ownership that follows, responsibility should be visible, traceable and accountable. *Every dog starts with a breeder* #ResponsibleDogOwnership #DogWelfare #ResponsibleBreeding

The Responsible Dog Ownership Taskforce report recommends exploring regulation of dog trainers and behaviourists, improving consumer awareness and making it easier for owners to find quality support. That's an important part of responsible ownership. ☑️ But we also need to think about what happens before training is ever needed. Responsible breeding, informed ownership, good education, early support and access to appropriate training all have a role to play. *Every dog starts with a breeder* #ResponsibleDogOwnership #DogWelfare #ResponsibleBreeding

The Responsible Ownership Taskforce Report recommends targeted campaigns for adults, better education for children, easier access to responsible ownership resources and more research into what actually changes behaviour. We support that. But education works alongside accountability. People need good information. Dogs need responsible breeding. Owners need support. And there needs to be a system that can identify responsibility when things go wrong. Education + prevention + accountability = a more responsible approach to dog ownership. *Every dog starts with a breeder* #ResponsibleDogOwnership #DogWelfare #ResponsibleBreeding

You can't enforce what you can't trace. The Taskforce has called for better enforcement guidance, improved training, stronger use of existing powers and better information sharing between agencies. But enforcement also needs the right information. • Who bred the dog? • Who owns it now? • Has ownership changed? • Has there been a previous incident? • Is there a history that agencies need to know? A joined-up lifetime record could help turn fragmented information into meaningful accountability. Better systems. Better information. Better enforcement. *Every dog starts with a breeder* #ResponsibleDogOwnership #DogWelfare #ResponsibleBreeding
