Zlatko Tripić has had a remarkable career and trajectory. I suppose almost every Bosnian football fan has come across his name somewhere over the past few days or weeks.
He started at Norwegian clubs, struggled in the German second tier in his mid-20s, ended up in Moldova and was also average at best in Turkey. Returned to Norway at 29 and has since recorded 183 G/A in 235 appearances for Viking. This season, 26 G/A in 21 matches, including 5 in the UCL (Bayern, Stuttgart & Dinamo).
He said in an interview that he was an option for the Bosnian NT during his time at Göztepe, but if I read it correctly, Norway didn’t allow dual nationality at the time, so he passed.
There’s been some debate about whether we should give him another chance, but I think that ship has already sailed. He turns 34 soon. If we didn’t have other priorities and he had already made his debut, he’d certainly be useful, but it’s not worth it at this point.
I was always a bit sceptical about his numbers in the Norwegian league, but he’s delivering in the UCL as well now. But it’s important to mention that Viking are a well-drilled collective, which makes their players look better individually too. Still, a remarkable story.
