Despite the reassurance of @_mohansolo and the Deepmind team, it does appear as though many Antigravity users are still getting their Google accounts banned. They did a big wave today.
I don't think people understand just how risky it is to try and use their Google Gemini subscriptions outside of Google's official surfaces. You can get your ENTIRE GOOGLE ACCOUNT BANNED. OpenAI or Anthropic ban? Annoying but whatever Google account ban? Legit life ruining.

I find it funny how we're often better than giving advice than actually receiving it and acting upon it, which causes a weird cycle of a bunch of conversations that usually lead to nothing. Now, I will say that most advice given is too blunt or literal, with no important context for someone's situation attached. So overall it's somewhat low quality. But there are definitely exceptions to this where your friend comes to you to vent or talk about a problem and you do multiple rounds of careful proposing -> caveat/correction/accept -> repeat. Though more often than not, after all of that, the person does absolutely nothing! And I can't even blame them, because I've done the same thing as well! I often say that it isn't the right time or I'm not ready, or some other kind of excuse. Which is precisely what they say as well... Now, and I'm biased, I will say that in my situation I really *am not* ready and that there are circumstances stopping me, and that I've never had an effective advice-giving conversation the way I described it above, but I can also recognize that this is the same kind of rationalization that others are doing as well. We're all (or at least people I know) are stuck in this circle doing very little and it's all tied to self-confidence and agency, and being paralyzed by it. Now, I have gotten better, especially in the last couple of months. Before my timelines before taking any kind of action was many, many months, now it's much shorter and I feel like by the end of October I should have a lot more moving! And there are already a few *somewhat* less important things in the pipeline (languages, programming, projects).

modern gaming isn't as fun anymore. besides some indie games (exception) all i'm enjoying is older titles.

I'm not even a chud but man the nixos discourse has done my head in. you could literally hate my race, my beliefs, and all of what i stand for, but as long as you neutrally accept/submit PRs i do not care! if my entire job is to push a technology forward, then i (in a professional capacity) should welcome anyone who wants to contribute, financially or with code, with open arms. i know that things are inherently political, and that one might decide to use their agency in a situation to stop a viewpoint they don't like from advancing, and they have every right to, but at least in the cases of nix e.g. no money from the military industrial complex, always looking at a big player's politics, countless threads of political discourse, i think it does more harm than good. *your entire job is to write code.* imagine if linus did a background check of the views that everyone who submitted a patch held? imagine if this was the standard approach to foundational technologies? it's also just a massive drain in energy and time: you are worsening the project by incentivizing people to fork you purely for structural reasons, you are wasting time you could spend doing things you enjoy but are instead wasting it on something which does not help change your mood for the better. also, being frank, the only way you can change someone's politics, if you're still held up by that, is by interacting as much as you can with them in a neutral setting. the less tribalism there is, the more chances there are for honest and nuanced discussion over time, and the better things tend to turn out.

you might say that the discussion is about helping them with their own project, and not something inherently about nix and their codebase, but it's still beneficial! it would bring in so many users! if you think that's a step too far despite the benefits, then reject the project offer straightforwardly and say that you're always willing to accept PRs, and actually welcome them in, banning any inflammatory discussion from topics like politics. this is why i really think nix needs an involved BDFL rather than a steering committee and more and more organizations (for what is a tiny market share of linux distros and package managers!) i've interacted with my lion's share of terrible people. and it's humbling and something simultaneously odd to set your views aside, and learn from them. sure, continue to feel however you want, but extract the benefit!

another day spent thinking about how much aura the dbz games on ps2 had, they were perfect

I haven't ever hated much in my life but I've got to give it to LessWrong and the broader rationalist community on here. One of the most arrogant and insufferable subcultures I've found so far.

Groupthink, groupspeak, extreme vagueposting, pompous/arrogant nature, dismissal about challenging their views "no u gotta read all the sequences and ssc bro!", doomer and self-important mentality regarding AI safety, tolerance of some outlandish ideas and viewpoints - somewhat implicitly based on who interacts with (and of what content) of who.

IT HAS BEEN A WEEK AND IM STILL CHANGING MY NIX CONFIG, SEND HELP so like largely my problem, and a good one to have - i'm excited about how much i can change and i'm having fun more with my computer now, but this is taking a while!

crazy to think my first introductions to internet communities were quora and the libertarian subreddit (lmao) at 13 if only it would have been lesswrong instead... i could be a (rich) doomer working at a frontier lab 😔

i've found 3 accounts with snoopy profile pictures and all of them are good poasters. was this the secret all along???

I enjoyed their video for announcing the voice thing way better than this one. This feels very uninspired and tasteless? They've technically showed the abilities of the model here but not in an engaging manner! I don't care about some spaceship model or an asteroid-dodging game. Nor do I care about law agreements, or selling things on eBay. The music wasn't my cup of tea either. I'm very excited for the model, but I do wish they had done a big second pass on this video. What would I have wanted to see? Use cases highlighting education across different age groups, research, tinkering/reverse-engineering/modding your own devices, coming up with a flashy portfolio website in a more interactive and in-control manner, and maybe even the things they did in the video, but executed in a more exciting way!
This is GPT-6 Astra. Anything you can do on a computer, Astra can do for you. Fast.

you know i don't think the universe is a simulation but sometimes when my timeline shows me the exact three accounts in a row which i saw last week, with posts related to what i saw last week as well... then i start going a little insane 😨

All that's left now is Astra...
Fable 5.1 ✅ Astra ❓ Google's new model ❓ Hoping it all drops soon, or even this week, would make for an interesting time!

I cannot put into words just how excited I am now that I'm learning Rust, improving my Haskell, and giving NixOS a shot. I haven't had this much fun in a while!

Something I've been interested in, ever since being part of various internet communities across lots of topics - gaming, movies, and languages to name the most prominent ones - is how people consolidate their behavior online with their behavior in real life. Personally, I make sure they're both the same. Though to talk specifically about my account here: of course, there's things I post about here which I can't post on my main, usually because I don't want to mess up future relationships by saying something blunt about a company or a person, or because I want to post about my private aspects of my life here without the social stigma I might have on my main (yay anonymity!) But what's perplexing is the people who keep them entirely separate and let their online self heavily diverge from their real self, I've seen it happen before and it's very unsettling IMO. It's like they're playing a character, and the longer you see them like this the more unhinged their viewpoints and interactions become. I don't even think this is particularly rare. You see someone, who is normal enough, undergo a shift over a year or more, as they get deeper into a community or subculture, or just get too attached to the idea of posting anonymously and forget that there's real human connections which can be formed through all of this. Some common patterns I've seen are: 1. Frequently lying about their life and fabricating details to seem more interesting. 2. Becoming more comfortable in being bigoted. This is especially bad if the community subculture is one which doesn't punish this, or even encourages it under the guise of "edgy" jokes, which always gets out of hand and goes from jokes to statements said with intent/belief. Bonus points if this change happens to someone who is a minority themselves! 3. Viewing interactions as temporary or fickle, and taking an antisocial approach to them e.g. being quick to cut contact, acting erratically, badmouthing and gossiping, etc. 4. Becoming obsessed with their online persona over doing things in real life. What's especially irritating is how sometimes the only good communities for a particular interest are ones which naturally end up leading to these things. A community with useful resources for something which is relevant to you, which isn't well moderated. The reason that I say this is bad as well, even if you don't fall into those patterns and stay true to yourself, is that it is over time massively draining to interact with people who follow those exact patterns. This isn't even to say that one shouldn't engage with viewpoints they disagree with, I have talked about that before in another post which I've linked at the bottom, but the key distinction is here about whether someone is coming into the discussion with a genuine approach or just trying to ragebait you and be edgy (most likely the latter two!) The whole thing that prompted this post was twofold. One was realizing how a lot of the accounts here, who are followed by niche influencers on this side of tech on this platform, somewhat fall into this archetype. Where it feels like I'm not talking to a human, and just seeing a caricature instead. The second is a follow-up from the first where someone will embody most, if not all, of the patterns and trivialize topics which could have a nuanced discussion behind them e.g. immigration, rights, culture, etc.
I think there's a time and place to be staunch about your views. For some topics regarding politics, immigration, culture, and what have you, that does apply. But I think there's equally as many topics where it doesn't. I don't even bother discussing these things in detail online - haven't done so for almost a decade, if not more - because of how "gamified" it feels. Everyone wants to have their opinion validated and no-one bothers listening to the other side. It's a weird tribalism kind of thing. I do think there's a lot of value in trying to see things from the other PoV, but unfortunately that kind of discourse is dying and you only have half-assed attempts at it nowadays. For example there's that one show on YouTube (is it by Jubilee?) where you put 20 people from Side A against 1 person from Side B in a room and let them talk about a topic. Sounds good right? Well, it would have been except they set a strict time limit and let people vote the current speaker out... It's such a performative attempt at closing the gap between the sides and trying to have an honest discussion. Extremely scummy. Most online spaces which reward opinions by likes or upvotes, and discredit ones which go against the norm with downvotes, don't help either. IRL, unlike online, I do enjoy talking about this stuff when I can. And the most interesting conversations are always where I can talk to friends or acquaintances of mine who have the complete opposite views from me. Sometimes we end up seeing eye to eye on a couple of things, but differ entirely on others, and while we may not agree fully, we hear the other's thinking out. It feels very authentic, and I think beyond the obvious reasons, it's also because none of us are really that invested in trying to change the other's mind. Online you're competing against others in trying to give a witty line for likes or dunking on someone else, but IRL you're just shooting the shit. And oftentimes, when I have come around to something, it's because of this. The discussion will linger in my head, I'll think things through again, maybe do a bit of research, and slowly come around their way of seeing things. Won't always happen, but sometimes it does. Though on the Internet the "goal" is to get someone to say they're wrong and you're right.
