If readers could get credit for attention they spend, as proof of commitment / competence on subjects, idea of value is transformed. Becomes identity. Then quality beats quantity.
We’ve been brainwashed to think it can’t be the consumer that tangibly benefits. This is a fallacy.
Gift link but first:
➡️ Meta is worth $1.47 trillion. This settlement is 1 percent of that. Guess what? Meta's stock rose 1.3% on the news of the settlement. Tidy bit of business!
➡️ For the most recent full fiscal year (2025), Meta generated $200.97 billion in total revenue and took home a profit of $60.46 billion. So this seemingly enormous fine is just over 1/4 of their *profit* in *a single year*.
➡️ This comes *10 years* after they made the feed in Instagram algorithmic, and *17 years* after doing so on Facebook, with push notifications being on *that entire time*. So: 10-17 years until any sort of accountability for knowingly harmful/ negligent design (see court disclosures over the years), in exchange for a quarter of 1 year of profit. What a sweet deal.
Innovation is exponential and proactive, policy is linear and reactive. Loophole is obvious.
We are living in a world where the law doesn't matter, as long as you can speed-run the profit curve before the law catches up. Then you can more or less keep doing what you’re doing and keep most of the $.

About to launch a research/ resource center around related concept of information health, including infotrition (there’s a diet component to intellectual fitness alongside strength training component). Some thoughts:
- attention stamina is a key part of intellectual fitness RE: longer works.
- Kind of like light (particle vs. wave), info can be both dietary through consumption and resistance training through persistence. AI use (the kind 90%+ of people will ever engage in) hinders both, esp the latter.
- one of my fav terms from world of edu is “desirable difficulties”. Good friction. To built intellectual fitness you need to opt into friction when the rest of the world is entirely optimized around removing it.

You know what would be amazing if Vance and his team can negotiate an agreement where Iran doesn't enrich above 3.67% (far below weapons grade); gets rid of 98% of its stockpile of enriched uranium; has weekly inspections by the IAEA; keeps the straits open without charging anyone; and commits to all of this for at least ten years. Oh, yeah, that was the Obama Iran deal.
My friend has launched something new. Behold ✨
Given personality insights are all the rage (MBTI, astrology etc) am v curious to see where this goes.
💭Am fascinated by idea of games as a personalization layer, organic behaviour as personal insights. The game layer of the quantified self.

“Have you ever found yourself emotionally invested in the Toronto Maple Leafs? Has watching them in the playoffs ever make you think about walking into the sea? Do you hate yourself for foolishly allowing the hope sink in? You may be entitled to financial compensation.”
This is supposed to be a pro-Conservative argument by Postmedia? “Slogan-packed” and avoiding that “egghead” “funny accounting”?🫠
Are conservatives not cheesed at being openly labeled as only able to understand picture books and simple words? #Election2025

When do we start to call this by its name? A French researcher has his phone and laptop confiscated and is refused entry because of personal messages found in a "random search" at the border criticizing Trump.

/ If you believe what you say on a given subject should be amplified and trusted, you should have to show your effort put in to be seen by more than 100 people. This would fix 99.9% of what's making platforms (and the world they shape) enshittified noise-over-signal toxic bogs.

I cant get over this. I'm trying to opt-out of Meta training AI on my Instagram photos.
I followed the MAZE of buried pages trying to get to the AI opt-out page, and when I'm finally done, finish 2-Factor Auth, the page just gives me an error!
All fields are filled!

This data is absolutely insane, if true. Basically every category of meeting one's romantic partner is diving toward zero and getting eaten by online.

The true threat of AI generated content is not that it will convince us to believe things that aren't true, it's that we won't believe anything unless it reinforces what we already think is true, or we'll just disengage completely because the truth seems impossible to find.
