Ukraine’s Khartiia Corps said Russian forces shelled a group of civilians being led toward the Shebelinka-Ostrogozhsk gas pipeline near Kupyansk on October 13. The group included two women, a child and several men and repeatedly came under mortar and artillery fire, according to the unit. Reconnaissance drone footage showed casualties among the civilians. Khartiia said Ukrainian troops did not open fire and assessed that the shelling came from the Russian-held eastern bank of the Oskil. #Ukraine

OLJATO, Ariz. — The Navajo Nation Veterans Administration celebrated U.S. Army veteran Phyllisia Simpson’s new home on October 14 in Oljato, Arizona, marking a milestone for the former military police officer who served during Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2008 to 2009.
Simpson received her home six months after submitting her application. The home was constructed under a Navajo Nation veteran housing contract with BITCO, a company owned by Navajo Nation member Jeremiah Bitsuie.
“Navajo veterans deserve safe, accessible homes in the communities they call home,” Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said. “Through this $31.7 million contract, we are investing in 95 homes for veterans across the Navajo Nation at less than $180 per square foot.”
The homes are designed to accommodate veterans’ needs, including those with mobility challenges. Features include 36-inch-wide doorways, wheelchair-accessible sinks, spacious showers, accessible closets and aluminum ramps with ridges to improve wheelchair stability in icy weather.
Each home includes a washer, dryer, stainless steel refrigerator, dishwasher and reverse osmosis drinking water filtration system. Homes are also equipped with a wood stove and mini-split heating and cooling system. In rural areas without permanent utility connections, solar panels and water cisterns provide alternative electricity and water sources.
“Veterans have given their time, their strength and, in many cases, years away from their families to serve this country,” Navajo Nation Veterans Administration Director Aaron Long said. “For Phyllisia, receiving the keys to her home marks an important new chapter.”
The key-turning ceremony honored her military service while highlighting the importance of ensuring veterans have access to the housing and resources they have earned.
The Navajo Nation remains committed to working with veterans, housing programs and community partners to improve access to housing and strengthen support for those who have served.
