Coaches…your tactical instructions land in a human environment. But how much attention do you give to that environment?
Steven Pressley discusses his priorities at Dundee in this video. As a younger manager, he placed greater emphasis on tactical detail. Experience has helped him recognise the importance of communication, belonging, relationships, and respect.
The tactics still matter - he makes that clear. But players need to understand them, buy into them, and feel able to execute them. And for me, this is where culture connects directly to performance psychology.
Think about the player who makes a mistake. What happens around them next? A teammate offers an option or turns away. A coach gives a useful cue or expresses frustration. The player stays involved or becomes preoccupied with getting something wrong again.
Culture…Environment…Mindset…
Those everyday interactions help shape where a player directs their attention, how they manage their mental intensity, and whether they approach the next action, the next session, the next day, and the next game with intent.
Culture is visible through behaviour. Who keeps communicating when you concede? Who offers for the ball after losing it? Who helps a struggling teammate stay in the game? And how consistently do coaches model the responses they ask for?
Pressley makes another important point: winning makes it easier to build belief. Losing tests the culture you’re trying to create. It tests whether respect survives frustration…whether support continues when someone is struggling…whether accountability helps people improve…whether your standards hold when the results offer little encouragement.
Alongside “How do we want to play?”, every coach needs to ask: “How do we want to treat each other when playing well becomes difficult?”

there's a pandemic of football content creators that don't know about football.

The mentality of the coach I want in my team
🚨 Michael Carrick on fielding a strong team vs Brighton:
🗣️ Reporter:
“There’s nothing left to play for. A lot of people were surprised by such a strong lineup.”
🗣️ Carrick:
“And that mentality right there is exactly why some clubs never become elite. What do you mean there’s nothing to play for?
This is Manchester United. Since when did we start celebrating third place like it’s a trophy? If I can score 10 against Brighton, I will. Happily.
Not because I hate them… but because we don’t relax here.
Even at 3-0, you go for the fourth. Then the fifth. Then the sixth. We’ve picked up the most points in the league since I took charge… and I don’t plan on dropping that standard. Next season, people will understand what we’re building.”
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Michael Carrick did not say this; it is satire from an account whose bio reads "Football fiction & satire only | Pure banter for laughs | Don’t believe a word." x.com/ChinoUTD youtube.com/watch?v=LJKVRJ…

One of the biggest things of football still being in the dark ages, is how people lazily look at physicality.
They look at physicality through height, size, power.
If you asked someone. Who’s more physical. Gyokeres or James Maddison?
They’ll laugh and say “obviously Gyokeres”.
No. Gyokeres has SOME physical attributes better than Maddison, Maddison has plenty physical attributes better than Gyokeres.
I’d also go as far to say Gyokeres has probably been shrugged off the ball more times in the opening months than Maddison has in an entire season.
Why? Becuase Maddison has phenomenal balance, agility, deceleration. You can’t get to him to actually shrug him off, by the time you’re decelerating and distributing your weight, he’s already turned on a sixpence and is away. Whereas the far bigger Gyokeres takes a while to ground himself and decelerate so in those moments he approaches the ball, he’s easier to push off it.
Whereas if you’ve got both players, at full speed and power, and it’s side by side, shoulder to shoulder, Gyokeres obviously completely dominates James Maddison.
Point being, we have to stop equating physicality in football to “size, strength, power, speed” when there are so many facets to it. And it’s even scarier when people who work in the game do it by looking at a players height or physique…
