Military History - Special Air Service - Melwyn Roger “Mel” Parry QGM - Op Nimrod On 5 May 1980, as the SAS prepared to storm the Iranian Embassy in London, Melwyn Roger “Mel” Parry led the four-man team assigned to the first-floor balcony. Parry had joined the Royal Artillery as a Boy Soldier in 1961. He later served with 7th Parachute Light Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery, during the 1964 Radfan campaign before passing selection for 22 Special Air Service Regiment at the age of 19. By 1970 he was serving with B Squadron, 22 SAS, in Dhofar, Oman. The Airborne Assault Museum records that a sniper’s round passed through the top of his shoulder during one action and that he remained with his comrades rather than being evacuated. Former SAS soldier Bob Shepherd later recalled Parry crossing exposed ground under heavy tracer fire to reach a badly wounded comrade. His best-known operation came on 5 May 1980. At about 7:23pm, Operation Nimrod began. Parry led the balcony team and moved forward to place the framed explosive charge against the armoured frontage. According to the Airborne Assault Museum account, a hostage-taker above dropped a hand grenade towards him as he worked. It failed to explode. The charge detonated, the team entered, and within minutes hostages were being brought out. Nineteen hostages were rescued; five of the six hostage-takers were killed and the surviving gunman was captured. Parry received the Queen’s Gallantry Medal for his actions. The official award record names him as Private Melwyn Roger Parry, The Parachute Regiment. It was published in 1994 and backdated to 6 April 1981. He later rose to Warrant Officer Class 1, commanded the SAS Operational Requirements Department and served as chief instructor of its Counter Revolutionary Warfare Wing. Mel Parry died on 21 May 2023, aged 76, after a long illness. He was survived by his wife Gail and a daughter.

If it is polarising to state the scientific truth, then we have ended the era of rational debate - thanks to the hidden agenda of the BBC
The BBC has announced a two-part documentary on J.K. Rowling. I’d like to be wrong, but I’m not optimistic she gets a fair shake. Episode one is a victory lap: the Edinburgh cafés, the books, the billions. Episode two is where the trouble starts. It frames her as “one of Britain’s most polarising public figures,” and the producer says her “unflinching personal beliefs” sparked a “fraught and divisive dialogue.” That’s not a biography. That’s a setup. Notice the pattern. The BBC casts her views — keeping women safe from predatory men in female only spaces — as the problem. The release says she finds herself divided from actors and fans who once championed her. It never mentions the women she was defending. It also doesn’t say who will be interviewed other than to say it will include “people who worked with her.” Full disclosure: @trishaposner and I share a London literary agent with her. But after four decades reporting on controversial subjects, I don’t pull punches for anyone. I recently walked away from Simon & Schuster, my publisher of many years, over its refusal to condemn a novelist’s vile anti-Jewish hatred. I’m not defending Rowling out of loyalty. Her activism has been one of the great campaigns for women everywhere. She never asked for the fight and never ran from it, and she took on enormous powers to protect women. I admire and stand with J.K. Rowling. I hope the BBC proves me wrong but I am not counting on it.

This is Blackie and Seaman James "Lofty" Martin of the research ship Discovery. When a violent roll of the ship caused Blackie to slide into the icy Antarctic waters during a 1929-1931 expedition, Martin immediately leapt into the sea to rescue her. Martin could not reach Blackie, so another crewman was dangled over the water on a bowline until he was able to snatch the cat. The soggy moggy spent several hours in the warm engine room drying out. Blackie was not affected by the incident and later had several kittens. #cat #cats #catlovers
