Douthett, a musician from Michigan, had an undiagnosed diabetes condition when his dog Kiko bit off his infected toe in 2010. Douthett had been ignoring a foot infection, and the bite from his dog led to doctors diagnosing his severe diabetes. Kiko, a Jack Russell terrier, chewed off the infected toe while Douthett was passed out from drinking. Douthett initially thought his wife had removed his toe but later realized it was Kiko who had done it while he was asleep. Doctors said that Kiko’s bite likely saved Douthett’s life, as the infection could have spread further without treatment. Douthett admitted he had ignored his wife’s advice to see a doctor about his foot pain for weeks before the incident.
