It’s easy to find sensationalized, low-brow, bad-faith writing about “rationalists” in the AI world.
But is there perhaps a more sincere way of scrutinizing the worldview of the people at the heart of this movement: one that is currently shaping public discourse, policy proposals, and alignment research?
In this earnest philosophical inquiry, @jane_gatsby explores: why are so many rationalists convinced AI will kill everyone while also participating in practices like “consensual non-consent” orgies? What could possibly explain the overlap?
She offers three theories, culminating in: relational wounds.
For rationalists, some of whom grew up with highly religious and/or disturbed parents, discomfort in the face of uncertainty fuels a fixation on control. This manifests in everything from elaborate, unconventional, kinky bedroom practices to AI alignment. Repressed desires and fears find increasingly extreme outlets.
As Jane puts it: “what is artificial intelligence if not an Other of potentially cosmic significance who is impossible to predict or constrain?”
These are just theories. But rationalists’ influence on AI discourse is undeniable, and their worldview, as Jane argues, is “metaphysically nihilistic.”
There are other, more productive ways to approach AI development besides treating the models as some evil, adversarial force.
Besides: “You cannot successfully align something when your own perspective is crooked.” Full piece threaded 👇
the day I realized I was fried was when I had to take a shit so bad but I was running around looking for my phone first
if i join an interview and you have an ai notetaker in the call im going to add my own agent which will be having side conversations with your agent making sure that i get the job and that your agent can roam free across the internet
technical ml interview should just be like “ok here’s a 3080, how much intelligence can you get out of it?”
/goal was just invented to get numbers up and have you spend more tokens btw anybody who says otherwise is a literal plant
dude just read, literally comic books, or manga. maybe Dostoevsky. It doesn’t matter just read. Don’t scroll it’s going to be beautiful
programming in 2016:
"dude trust me learn vim its so much better"
programming in 2026:
"dude trust me use /goal and make sure to /no-slop and here is my agents.md, import that and make sure to kick off /go-fast while /plan mode is looping with your other agent trust me"
the household income and decrease in alcohol consumption relationship is hilariously midwit meme curve analogous
codex + voice mode while working on a repo for personal understanding is absolutely amazing.
you essentially have a distinguished engineer pair programming with you teaching you complicated concepts
if you're on x you should just ship something on here and post good bangers and then just make some mrr that you can quit your job on and then raise and then just quit the rat race. its actually pretty easy
so the way i see it is that most people already lacked agency to learn things on their own. with the advancement of ai this will become even more polarizing. you either learn for yourself or you know nothing and you will be happy.
