While short domain names sell for colossal amounts, like land in Manhattan, exonemo trades in the opposite: the duo registers meaningless domain names of 63 characters, the maximum length permitted, and grows an HTML wilderness generated from random strings on each one. Whoever buys a website owns both the domain and its wilderness, free to build there as they wish. Bidding opens at $24, the sum Dutch colonial director Peter Minuit is said to have paid the Lenape for Manhattan Island in 1626. Opening Tonight in New York: WEBSITES WEBSITES WEBSITES! 🕕 6–9 PM 📍 39 Great Jones St, NY WEBSITES WEBSITES WEBSITES! (WWW!) celebrates the website as an artistic medium, bringing together twenty artists for Rhizome’s 30th anniversary. Without attempting a definitive history of Net Art, the exhibition explores thirty years of our changing relationship with the internet through browser experiences that invite experimentation, intimacy and critique. Presented physically in New York City and online, the exhibition offers two ways to explore the works. In the gallery, loose thematic and aesthetic connections encourage unexpected discoveries, while varied hardware shapes how visitors encounter each piece.
