Windward expands into Maritime Visual Intelligence with acquisition of Azimut AI.
The newly added sensing layer identifies and fingerprints vessels in real time at maritime chokepoints and ports, enabling the visibility of vessels even when they go dark to evade detection.

Seven sanctioned Russian tankers have spent the past 90 days falsely broadcasting that they were drifting off the Black Sea entrance to the Bosphorus.
Windward’s remote-sensing intelligence shows they were instead sailing to the Russian oil terminal of Novorossiysk to load oil, hugging the Black Sea coastline to avoid Ukrainian drone attacks.

Thank you to everyone who raised a glass with us at Booth J128.
A great way to close a busy day, and a reminder that the best conversations at #EURONAVAL2026 don’t only happen at a demo screen.
Today at Booth J128, our experts walked delegations through the platform, from dark vessel identification to real-time operational intelligence, applied to the regions and missions that matter most to them.
Demos run daily at Hall 6, Booth J128 until Friday.
Come and see it for yourself.

Gulf oil exports are back above prewar levels, but the risk is rising.
October’s attacks account for 20% of all ships hit during the Iran war, and war-risk insurance now runs up to 10% of a vessel’s value, up from under 3%, Windward’s Michelle Wiese Bockmann (@Michellewb_) told @WSJ. wsj.com/world/middle-east/mo…
Proud to welcome naval delegations from around the world to Booth J128 at #EURONAVAL2026.
It’s been great to show how all-source operational intelligence, with real-time 24/7 mission support, helps teams move from maritime awareness to decisive action.
Booth J128 has been full of conversation at #EURONAVAL2026. Live demos on dark vessel identification and maritime domain awareness all day in Hall 6. #MaritimeSecurity
Over 2,000 dark tankers are now at sea, and transponders are routinely switched off for safety during regional conflicts. Traditional overhead and radio signals are no longer enough.
Windward has acquired visual intelligence pioneer Azimut.ai, integrating optical sensors at key maritime chokepoints directly into our all-source intelligence platform to bridge the gap between signal and reality.
This month’s MariTimes covers the acquisition, Windward CEO Ami Daniel's (@AmiDaniel1) take on the future of maritime domain awareness, and how to become a site partner. okt.to/Wf05Br
Round two. Happy hour at J128, today at 3:30 PM at #EURONAVAL2026 in Paris. Drinks, maritime insights, and great company. 🥂
Day 2 at #EURONAVAL2026. The doors are open and the booth is ready. Find Windward at J128 and see how our all-source maritime intelligence turns fragmented data into one clear operational picture.
The tankers that once served as Iran’s floating storage outside the Gulf now sit largely empty. Of 140 Iran-linked tankers broadcasting AIS outside the Gulf, 115 are in ballast, and only three of the 76 at five holding areas are laden.
With no AIS-transmitting tanker in the Gulf showing a loading since September 17, there is no evidence of where Iran’s crude is going.
Three possible explanations, and one is Iran’s worst case scenario. okt.to/azUovK
Only one of three tankers reported to be sailing to the U.S. with Russian diesel still appears to be heading for the Atlantic coast. General License 135 has yet to result in any cargo being delivered to the U.S. okt.to/yctNGe
Iran’s AIS-transmitting tankers in the Gulf have stopped loading. None of them have shown a draft change indicative of loading since September 17, with nearly 24M bbl of capacity sitting in 15 ballast tankers.
There is no evidence of where the crude is going instead, leaving three explanations. Read the full analysis. okt.to/erBqti
The Indian Navy has freed the latest of eight fishing vessels targeted by Somali pirates in 2026. Dhows and fishing vessels can serve as motherships that extend pirate range far offshore and toward major shipping lanes, a risk the Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean highlighted after the AZINI hijacking.

I've been doing "ships" for 24 years now (almost 25!). The first days of AIS were exciting. You can finally see ships at scale. We were the first customer of ExactEarth satellite AIS, and of Orbcomm AIS (now part of S&P Global).
However there are two big changes that happened recently, both require a new way to think about maritime domain awareness:
1. Shipping became much more dark. Between the Russian Dark Fleet, the Iran - US War (where shipping became 83 % darker!) and the Ukraine-Russia war and the attacks on ships in the Black Sea, the same technology you were supposed to turn on for safety at sea - AIS - - now requires you to turn it off for safety at sea.
2. Agentic AI: Data is the new oil. More than ever organizations want (and can) build their own in house data lakes, repositories and platforms. They want high quality data.
This is why we're very proud today to announce the acquisition of Azimut.ai , led by Matan Saat, Tomer Marom, Shay Lavi and Yuval Kassif.
Maritime Visual Intelligence is the future of maritime domain awareness. The ability to identify and fingerprint ships from coastal or shipborne cameras at scale is a game changer, especially when combined natively with @WindwardAI data, activities , risk models and agents.
There is another point: if you care, you can make a difference. Hormuz woke up the world to how much shipping is critical for our livelihoods. If you're worried about safety at sea, you care about the oceans, if you are worried about the dark fleet, about oil spills or illegal fishing. If you own a seaside hotel or a fishing boat that roams the oceans. Become a site partner and reach out. Together we are stronger. 70% of the world is made of water. We can't do this alone.
