Oh, hello there… 🧡
Did you know it's Red Squirrel Awareness Week?! We're celebrating one of Britain's most recognisable native species and the conservation work helping to secure its future.
With their distinctive ear tufts, russet-red coats and boundless energy, red squirrels are a wonderful part of our natural heritage. But competition from grey squirrels and the spread of squirrelpox have contributed to devastating declines, making their protection vital.
Since 2002, Wildwood Trust has been breeding red squirrels and supporting reintroduction projects on Anglesey and in Clocaenog Forest in Wales. We also coordinate a national conservation breeding group, bringing together expertise to maintain a healthy, genetically diverse population and support future releases where conditions are suitable.
Behind this work are dedicated keepers, conservationists, partners and volunteers who share a determination to give red squirrels a brighter future. This week, we're celebrating them too!
