Until recently, taxes aimed only at the super-rich were a dying breed. As recently as 1990, many countries (but not the US) had some form of “wealth tax” on the books. Most were eventually abandoned amid a political backlash. In November, though, California voters will decide whether to impose a one-time net worth tax of 5% on the state’s billionaires. It could pave the way for other measures in the US and beyond: Similar levies are up for discussion in Sweden, Germany, and France, while New York City is trying to tax pied-à-terre homes and the state of Washington is holding a referendum on adding a 10% surcharge to the income tax bill of anyone who makes more than a million dollars a year. What happened to bring this idea back into circulation—and does it matter to you if you aren’t a billionaire yet? Is it just us, or does it seem like people are paying a lot, often on a monthly basis, for things you used to just do? According to a MasterCard survey, the average US consumer’s annual spending on subscriptions rose $417 last year to a total of $1,887. Reports by Bain & Company attest that spending on luxury experiences has grown by 10% in the past two years while spending on luxury goods has actually declined. And as of last year, service-oriented businesses like fitness centers and spas occupy more square footage in the US than “goods-oriented” retailers. Economically speaking, what’s going on here? Everyone in tech loves to talk about AGI—“artificial general intelligence” or “AI that is more intelligent than humans”—but no one really agrees on what it means. The same goes for “the Singularity,” which is supposedly the moment when AI becomes self-controlling. And then, of course, there’s the question of whether self-controlled AI will try to destroy humanity. Below, we’ve tried to give a broad summation—based on statements made as early as 2023 and as recently as last month—of where some of the biggest voices in the discussion stand. Please do note that the AI landscape changes rapidly, and the views of the individuals above may evolve over time. Our next question: Is it weird that the stock market keeps going up when there’s so much uncertainty about inflation, war, and AI? @morganhousel says: “If you look at history, there’s never been a moment in which the future was clear... If you’re an investor waiting for the clouds to part, there’s always going to be things to worry about. Investing is enduring that uncertainty. That’s what you’re getting paid for, over time.”

The final question: How has your investing philosophy changed over time? @morganhousel's answer: “I started day trading stocks and it didn’t work. And then I was like, ‘oh, I’m going to be a long-term investor—I’m going to hold stocks for five days at a time.’ And I kept losing money. I’d been investing for two or three years before I was like, I should just invest in low-cost index funds.” —------- The content provided is for informational and educational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice or a recommendation of any particular security or strategy. How much is the suburban dream–an acre of land, an in-ground pool, and a house within an hour's commute of a major metro? Assuming you follow the rule of thumb that suggests spending about 30% of your income on housing, the total household income needed is anywhere from $115,000 to $630,000 (depending on where you look). That amount of space comes at a premium in very high cost-of-living metros, but could be achieved at a more reasonable price if you’re open to looking elsewhere. Of course, you could always consider the South of France, where the same type of home has a median price of $1.1 million, according to WSJ. Sounds like a steal!
