How can we protect drinking water from emerging pollutants like #PFAS while keeping water services affordable for everyone?
At Veolia, we know that tackling emerging pollutants requires more than a quick fix-it calls for a targeted, end-to-end strategy 🌊 - from prevention and diagnosis to treatment, monitoring and residue management.
Live from the #IWA World Water Congress in Glasgow, our Health & New Pollutant expert, Sarah Hercule-Bobroff, just outlined Veolia's cutting-edge-approach during the roundtable on emerging contaminants “Taking Action: From Diagnosis to Prevention and Treatment Solutions” organized by the French G7 presidency.
This end-to-end approach includes:
🔹Addressing pollution at its source
🔹Diagnosing the level and type of contamination
🔹Selecting site specific, optimized solutions
🔹Monitoring treatment performance
🔹Managing treatment residues responsibly
It builds on our operational experience, including for PFAS a campaign covering 2,400 drinking water contracts in France and the rapid deployment of mobile and fixed treatment solutions in the United States and France.
By combining operational expertise and capabilities across water technologies and waste-management assets, with data and innovation, we help communities protect water resources and public health for the long term. 🌱

In the United States, a 1% shortfall in #HazardousWaste treatment capacity could put $27 billion in projected economic output at risk in 2033.
This link between hazardous waste and industrial growth is at the heart of a @News_CRA study commissioned by Veolia. The stakes are especially high given that the U.S. already generates more than 30 million tons of hazardous waste each year, with an additional 5 million tons per year projected by 2033.
Behind these projections is a practical challenge for strategic industries, whose waste requires specialized management. The ability to treat it safely is essential to maintaining production and supporting further growth.
For Veolia, this means anticipating needs, deploying technologies suited to each waste stream, and recovering valuable resources wherever possible.
This is why we are strengthening our presence in the United States. With the acquisition of @CleanEarthInc, Veolia has become the second-largest hazardous waste management company in the U.S. Our network now includes 33 treatment.

We know the price of #water. But do we truly understand the cost of going without it?
According to the @UNUniversity, nearly 75% of humanity lives in water-insecure countries. This summer’s water restrictions in France are a reminder that water scarcity is no longer a distant threat.
Water is the lifeblood of our economy. Food production, energy generation and industrial activity all depend on reliable access to water. Yet a paradox persists in how we value this essential resource.
When water is available, its importance can be underestimated. But when scarcity hits, the financial consequences ripple across entire value chains. This gap holds back the investment needed to deploy proven solutions, such as water reuse, at scale.
At Veolia, securing water for communities and industries is at the heart of what we do. But technology alone isn’t enough. Understanding the risks associated with water scarcity and the investment opportunities in water security is essential to accelerating action.
That’s why our delegation, led by @sdaziano, convened water experts at New York Climate Week. In a roundtable facilitated by Sara Minard from @Columbia, we explored how to bridge the gap between water’s perceived and actual value, and identified concrete pathways to accelerate the adoption of sustainable water solutions.
📆 Mark your calendars to explore these challenges further:

U.S. economic growth is entering a new era, and #HazardousWaste management will be critical to sustaining it.
A new independent analysis by experts at @News_CRA, commissioned by Veolia, examines the important role hazardous waste management plays as an input to production across the U.S. economy. The report highlights:
🛢️ 30+ million tons of hazardous waste generated annually in the U.S.
📈 5 million additional tons per year expected to be generated as soon as 2033
💵 $27–$82 billion in U.S. economic output at risk if management capacity falls short by just 1–3%
Virtually all goods and services in the U.S. either produce hazardous waste directly or critically rely on inputs that do, including food production, agriculture, and chemicals used to manufacture life-saving medicines.
As industrial reshoring and the growth of strategic sectors such as semiconductors and vehicle batteries accelerate, ensuring sufficient hazardous waste management capacity will be critical to sustaining future industrial expansion and economic growth.

💧 What if securing access to #water were also a matter of national security?
In the Middle East, desalination plants are critical infrastructure, supplying water to communities, agriculture, and industry. In the United Kingdom, two-thirds of the country faced drought conditions this summer, at a cost of more than £1 billion.
In her latest @BBC interview, our CEO @E_Brachlianoff highlights several concrete solutions:
🔹 using artificial intelligence to pinpoint leaks and direct investment where it is most urgently needed;
🔹 reusing treated wastewater, as in Jordan, where it supplies 75% of the water used for irrigation;
🔹 developing desalination where necessary and recycling water for data centers instead of drawing on natural freshwater resources.
These are not solutions for the distant future. They are already being deployed around the world. In 2025 alone, #Veolia’s activities helped save 1.574 billion cubic meters of freshwater.
In the #UK and beyond, the next step is to scale them up: target investment, modernize infrastructure, and diversify water supplies before restrictions become unavoidable. Acting now means securing water while avoiding the far greater cost of the next crisis.

As water stress intensifies, particularly in arid regions, diversifying water sources is becoming essential. Seawater desalination helps address this challenge by enabling the large-scale production of fresh water.
So, how do we combat water stress by desalinating seawater?
🔹 Through thermal desalination, which transforms water into salt-free steam
🔹 Through reverse osmosis, which retains salt from water by membrane filtration
🔹 By leveraging digital innovation and AI to enable predictive maintenance of installations
🔹 By improving the energy efficiency of seawater desalination systems
🔹 By using local renewable energies, such as wind and solar, to power desalination plants
By combining these technologies with digital innovation and local renewable energies, seawater desalination is becoming a sustainable, low-carbon alternative to provide access to fresh water in arid regions.

Restoring land, strengthening resilience: as environmental challenges become increasingly interconnected, our responses must be systemic.
At #COP17 in Ulaanbaatar, UNCCD discussions highlighted the close links between land degradation, drought, water, biodiversity and climate change.
These challenges are interconnected: protecting natural resources also depends on how territories and ecosystems are managed. This means taking a holistic approach to water use, while considering the needs of communities, nature and economic activities.
This is the approach that Catherine Chevauché, Nature Director at Veolia, shared during the event, while also bringing the perspective of French businesses to the discussions through #EPE "Soil and Land in a changing world" publication.
For decades, Veolia has been developing practical solutions to reduce pressure on #water resources:
➡️in Windhoek, Namibia, wastewater has been transformed into drinking water since 1968
➡️in Arequipa, Peru, treated wastewater supports both a mining site and agricultural needs
➡️in Harworth, USA, watershed management helps protect raw water quality and reduce the treatment required
At the Group level, Veolia has also set a target of preserving 1.5 billion cubic meters of freshwater by 2027.
These solutions demonstrate how we can strengthen water security while protecting ecosystems and building more resilient communities and territories.
