Before your next bill, look at a few months of usage in your carrier’s app. Then compare what you pay with plans that cover what you need, including some extra room for busier months. You might already have a good deal. Or you might find you can spend less.

Your habits matter too. If you use a hotspot to work, stream without Wi-Fi or rely on your phone for internet at home, you probably need more data. If you’re connected to Wi-Fi most of the day, you might need less than you think.
66
You could spend hours on your phone at home and barely touch your cellular data because you’re on Wi-Fi. But if home internet is unreliable or you spend a lot of time on the road, your phone plan is doing more of the work.

Where you live might help explain it. Alaska, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Louisiana were among the highest-use states in our study, AKA places with less broadband internet availability and longer drives when commuting.

Average monthly usage was 23.6 GB, but a small group using a LOT of data pulls that number up (i.e. One line in the study used 658 GB in a month). The typical user sits at 14.5 GB. So what really determines the need for more data?

People go for unlimited plans for the peace of mind of knowing they won’t hit a ceiling, which is fair. But those numbers suggest some of us might be overestimating how much of a safety net we actually need.

You might know how much you pay for data, but do you know how much of it you actually use? We ran a study looking at US Mobile customers on unlimited plans. 51% used less than 15 GB a month.

Keep work separate, add a line for travel, or use a second network where your first is down. All on one phone @usmobile

Speed matters. The network(s) you’re on matter more. 😉
