In honor of Italian American Heritage Month, we’re sharing a tribute to UFT founder George Altomare (July 11, 1931 - Aug. 20, 2023). He was born to Italian immigrant parents in Queens and influenced early by his father’s work with the Amalgamated Clothing Workers. He later attended Brooklyn Tech HS and City College, where he found a passion in making a difference for kids in the community. After starting his teaching career in 1953 at Astoria JHS, Altomare and his colleagues shared frustrations with working conditions over lunch and decided to take a stand by joining the Teachers' Guild. At the time, the Teachers' Guild was dominated by elementary-school teachers; Altomare and his colleague Al Shanker were able to recruit secondary- and high-school educators to grow the union. The new young members pushed the Guild towards “a more active unionism”, as Altomare said. This culminated in the 1960 strike that created the UFT we know today. Altomare held both advisory and elected positions for the union over the decades. He created and led the UFT Strike Committee and Organizing Network, which led to successful strikes in the 1960s and ‘70s. He served as the union’s vice president for high schools for 25 years, and he helped negotiate DOE-UFT contracts through 1985. The UFT proudly remembers his role as one of our founders and a major contributor to our development into the strong union we are today. Happy Italian American Heritage Month!

Today, Gov. Hochul announced that New York State will opt into the Trump administration's voucher program. Giving up local control of public education to the federal government through this scheme is a failure of leadership. Gov. Hochul will bear the responsibility, but our students, educators, and families will bear the price. The UFT is disappointed in this decision and we will continue to stand with parents, educators and public school supporters to do what we can to roll back this policy and protect our classrooms. Public dollars should be for public schools, period! The Trump administration's private school voucher program will redirect billions of our tax dollars from schools that serve the vast majority of our children. Now that the proposed regulations for the federal voucher program, the so-called "Federal Scholarship Tax Credit," are public, we need your voice. Add your name to our coalition's petition to oppose this voucher program, which would drain funding from our public schools: publicschoolsuniteus.org/our… Urge Gov. Hochul to say "no" and keep New York out of this costly voucher scheme! Stand with our public schools! #NoFederalVouchers #OptOutNow #NoVouchersInNY #HochulSayNO

María Portalatín helped turn school paraprofessionals from low-wage workers with little power on the job into a powerful voice in organized labor. As a key leader at the @UFT, @nysut, and @AFTunion, she fought for better pay, benefits, and the respect paraprofessionals deserved.
