The polls said he'd lose in 1948. He won anyway. 🇺🇸

#OnThisDay in 1947, TV cameras came inside the White House for the first time. Truman's message? Skip meat on Tuesdays, poultry and eggs on Thursdays, and save a slice of bread a day to help feed a hungry postwar Europe. 📺

Bess Truman remains one of the least-understood first ladies in America’s 250-year history.
That’s why we’re excited to share Anita McBride’s new essay on Bess for @InPursuitUSA. Who was Bess behind the public persona & what influence did she wield during Truman's presidency?
Replying to @AnitaBMcBride
@AnitaBMcBride writes about Bess Truman, the woman who spent just 82 days as second lady before unexpectedly becoming First Lady, a role she never wanted.
But when Congress considered tearing down a crumbling White House in the late 1940s, Bess broke her own rule of staying silent. She lobbied Capitol Hill, spoke to the press, and helped save the White House.

Happy National Bow Tie Day from our favorite bow tie wearer!
Before he was President, Harry Truman was a haberdasher. So it's no surprise he knew how to dress sharp, often seen sporting this underrated fashion accessory!
