Can U.K. Indo-Pacific Minister, Baroness Winterton @FCDOGovUK, really be heading to Hong Kong? Let’s hope she’s secured time to visit British citizen Jimmy Lai, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence in Hong Kong for criticizing the Chinese Communist Party and supporting democracy. If she’s there to drive economic engagement, will she question Hong Kong’s role as the global hub for sanctions evaders, providing weapons components, illicit finance, and technology to autocrats in Moscow and Tehran?    As our “Beneath the Harbor” research series has shown, Britain Plc’s professional services — banks, legal services firms, logistics companies — are all tainted by association with Hong Kong’s thriving illicit trade.  So will Baroness Winterton ask for assurance that Beijing will stop the sanctions-busting and end its support for the warmongers threatening the U.K.?  We look forward to a full readout from the trip. thecfhk.org/research/safe-ha…

Dodging the question with word salad: @ukhomeoffice Minister @JoWhiteSays’ answer fails to explain how the Home Office can cite Hong Kong’s “competent criminal courts” to justify electronic travel authorization (ETA) refusals while ignoring the reality of the National Security Law and politically motivated prosecutions. Thank you, @coyleneil, for raising this important question!

It’s just not good enough. Every six months, @FCDOGovUK reports on Hong Kong and details how the Hong Kong regime has violated the Sino-British Declaration. But there's never any consequence. No one is held accountable. The rest of the world notices Britain's failure to hold anyone accountable. We’re constantly asked why Britain doesn’t do more to stand up for persecuted Hong Kongers. Pledging to “raise their cases” clearly isn’t enough. British citizen #FreeJimmyLai — serving 20 years in prison for being a journalist. Chow Hang-tung — serving seven years and four months for exercising her right to freedom of expression and commemorating the Tiananmen Square massacre. Joshua Wong — facing life in prison for contacting the outside world and standing up for democracy. Political prisoners prosecuted under the National Security Law are denied bail and held for years in pre-trial detention — presumed guilty and sometimes declared so before verdicts are even drafted. Some verdicts are written by different hands yet carry no signatures — the work of a collective avoiding responsibility for the wrongs they know they're inflicting on the innocent. Jimmy Lai was denied his choice of counsel. Hong Kong’s courts were overruled by Beijing. Yet the U.K. government says the common law system “continues to operate” in Hong Kong. When will this charade end? assets.publishing.service.go…

Evan Gershkovich witnessed Russia’s tightening censorship from inside a prison cell. Books by Ukrainian writers and authors deemed traitors began disappearing from the prison library. What can his experience teach us about Beijing’s tightening control over Hong Kong? Grace Young, the CFHK Foundation’s research analyst, attended the Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture at UCLA, where The Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Gershkovich spoke about his time inside a Russian jail. For her, Gershkovich’s experience offers important lessons for Hong Kong. Read Grace’s full article to learn more: thecfhk.org/where-the-honest…

Thank you, @_Chris_Coghlan , for standing up for Hong Kongers in Britain. Britain's Hong Kongers not only took to the streets to stand up for democracy and liberty in their home city, they’ve also spent five years making Britain their home. Now, they fear being stuck on a BN(O) visa forever, denied the right to settle in Britain because of politically motivated historical convictions from Hong Kong.  This government must restore confidence that it stands firmly behind pro-democracy Hong Kongers.

Experts agree that Hong Kong has become a vital hub for Russia and Iran to obtain sanctioned dual-use weapons components and illicit finance, reports @VOAChinese. Hong Kong is set up to support enemies of democracy — Hong Kong Justice Secretary Paul Lam confirmed Sept. 10 that the territory does not recognize U.S., U.K., or E.U. sanctions. It's an open invitation to sanctions evaders, and not enough is being done to stop them. As our new "Safe Harbor for Sanctions Evaders: Hong Kong’s Brazen Support for Iran and Russia" report shows, the world must wake up — sanctioning entities is not enough. @USTreasury should use its secondary sanctions authority to designate Hong Kong and Chinese banks financing illicit trade, adding them to the Specially Designated Nationals List and blocking their access to U.S. markets and U.S. dollar clearing. Thank you, Lord @PurvisTweed, for asking a simple question: Are Hong Kongers convicted on political charges still welcome in Britain? The government's reply is that all BN(O) applications will be considered "fairly and equitably." That’s not good enough.  Political prisoners who’ve suffered brutality and isolation inside Hong Kong’s prison system need Britain to keep its promise that it will provide them refuge.  We need assurance from the government that convictions related to "riot" and other political prosecutions linked to pro-democracy actions such as peaceful protest are not worth the paper they're written on. Such convictions should not be used as justification to turn away Hong Kongers.

New Zealand retired judge Sir Terence Arnold should know that joining Hong Kong's bench of shame — otherwise known as the Court of Final Appeal — will have lasting consequences for his reputation. @SamSachdevaNZ writes for @NewsroomNZ that a review of New Zealand's Guidelines for Judicial Conduct is ongoing and could include guidance for post-retirement conduct. As our U.K. Head of Public Affairs and Advocacy Tomas Roberto told Newsroom, "The Chinese Communist Party has weaponized Hong Kong's courts to crush dissent, while Chief Executive John Lee recruits retired common law judges to provide a veneer of legitimacy. It will not work. "To salvage his reputation, Sir Terence should reject this appointment.” newsroom.co.nz/2026/10/20/se…

Thank you, @jameswnaish, for highlighting in yesterday’s debate in the @UKParliament that Lords Neuberger and Hoffmann can earn up to £40,000 a month for sitting on Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal while Beijing’s National Security Law crushes judicial independence. Lords Neuberger and Hoffmann must resign. No peer should lend legitimacy to persecution.

Thank you to @RepRoKhanna for co-sponsoring H.R.10685, the Hong Konger Promise of Refuge Act. This bill stands with Hongkongers who have sought refuge from Beijing’s crackdown, offering those protected under Deferred Enforced Departure (#DED) a path to permanent residency so they no longer have to live in fear of deportation.

Hong Kong’s political prisoners cannot be forgotten. Journalists, activists, and lawmakers remain behind bars simply for speaking out, and Beijing has shown little regard for their well-being. The Jimmy Lai Hong Kong Political Prisoner Accountability Act would hold Beijing and Hong Kong officials accountable for how political prisoners are treated behind bars and require regular reporting to Congress on their health. Congress should stand up for freedom and human rights and pass this legislation immediately. thecfhk.org/bipartisan-lawma…
