When ChatGPT launched in late 2022, the consensus inside China’s AI industry was that domestic labs were roughly two years behind on models, while export controls would leave China’s AI stack woefully incomplete. Three and a half years later, that framing looks ... outdated. DeepSeek and GLM forced a rethink of what was possible on the model building and also inference side. Meituan LongCat raises the same question for training. None of this means China has caught up. Nvidia still has a massive manufacturing advantage, and US labs continue to lead in enterprise adoption, developer ecosystems and revenue. But we do think the burden of proof has shifted. The question is no longer simply whether China can build a frontier AI stack on domestic infrastructure. It’s how quickly that stack improves from here.

DeepSeek Releases New Model After Five-Hour Outage DeepSeek released its newest model after a five-hour outage, and hands-on testing suggests a major leap in capability. We'd be careful about extending that early assessment to every workload, but it gives users a reason to retry tasks the previous model couldn't handle.

Tencent is reportedly acquiring or investing in Turkish assets as part of its overseas expansion. We'd be careful about treating all of this as acquisitions, because investing in an asset doesn't necessarily give Tencent control over it. $TCEHY

Luxeed (智界), Chery’s car brand, is in line for its own vehicle manufacturing license, pending approval after the public notice period. A company insider told Yicai it also plans an independent listing. That comes after sales fell 67.5% year-on-year to 13,800 vehicles in the first five months of 2026, following 56% growth in 2025. We’d be careful about reading the license as a sign of expansion, because the filing transfers an existing Chery factory to Luxeed. Chery is applying to deregister its Wuhu plant address while Luxeed seeks approval at the same site. Once approved, the existing plant’s capacity and manufacturing status will sit under Luxeed’s name.

ByteDance launched Jianying Hub on September 20, bringing AI generation into its video editor. Creators can develop scripts and storyboards, generate material with ByteDance’s Jimeng and Xiaoyunque, then edit it on the timeline. Independent AI video platforms such as Flova have been building around the same need: keeping a project together without moving files between tools. But we doubt that a more convenient workflow alone gives these platforms much protection, because ByteDance also helps creators get their work seen and paid for. Xiaoyunque offers a direct Douyin distribution channel and cash incentives; Jimeng connects creators to commercial assignments through Xingtu. Distribution is already difficult. According to DataEye, Douyin added 221,900 AI short dramas in the first half of 2026, but only 1,055 exceeded 100 million views. Aishi Technology’s PixVerse is looking for customers outside that content pool. On October 9, its Growth Studio connected to Meta Catalog Product Video, turning product catalogs into video ads for merchants. That gives it a specific paid task beyond helping creators produce more short dramas, though it still has to compete with tools such as Marpipe and Creatify. If the ads perform poorly, merchants can cut the budget for producing those videos first. h/t @TMTPostGlobal

A new deep-dive argues ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming is quietly building a "world model" strategy aimed at general AI and embodied intelligence. The argument rests on a reading of ByteDance's AI research direction, so we'd be careful about treating it as a confirmed company roadmap.

Huawei’s recent two-day Shanghai briefing included its first detailed public explanation of Kirin chips in six years. The Kirin 9050 series puts its “logic folding” approach into production, stacking circuits by their logical relationships and connecting them through hybrid bonding. The connections are spaced 1.5 microns apart, with more than 50 million interconnect points on the Kirin 9050 Pro. Huawei attributes a 12.7% CPU clock gain and 41–66% energy-efficiency gains to logic folding. Because shorter connections reduce the time signals spend traveling, we see this as a practical way to keep improving chips even without smaller transistors. Huawei is targeting a 1 micron bonding pitch in 2027, against a top-metal pitch of 720nm on the current chip. It also says it already has “Kirin 2027” in hand, with test metrics meeting expectations. Finer connections would let Huawei split more logic across layers, further shortening the paths signals travel. h/t @Chinazhidx

In case you missed it: the four TBC posts that traveled furthest this week, each one landing on a different piece of the same question, what has to be scarce, or cheap, before the next wave of deployment actually happens. 1. CATL Has More Room to Turn Down Carmakers Xiaomi left CATL off the supplier list for its September 4 Longjia battery launch, choosing CALB and Sunwoda cells, and Li Auto reported progress on self-developed batteries, but domestic passenger vehicles contribute under 40% of CATL's gross profit while storage took nearly a quarter of first-half shipments. A CATL manager told Caijing the company would not reserve production lines for uncertain custom orders when storage and commercial vehicles offer higher unit prices and steadier demand, storage cells also share fewer specifications per line, spreading fixed costs across more orders. xitter.cf/TechBuzzChina/status/2… 2. ByteDance Researcher's New Startup Reaches $200M Post-Money Valuation Tian Keyu, a researcher reportedly fired by ByteDance, has launched a startup that trended on social media and drew a $200 million post-money valuation. The report identifies no product and no paying customers, so the figure reflects what investors were willing to pay rather than anything users have bought. xitter.cf/TechBuzzChina/status/2… 3. Doubao's Travel Entry Point Before Golden Week Doubao, ByteDance's assistant, added a travel entry point just before Golden Week, and Douyin Life Services reported hotel orders through it up more than 56% month-on-month, while Alibaba's Fliggy reported AI-guided flight and hotel bookings up 110% month-on-month. Both face the same limit: an assistant's best hotel is only the best one inside the inventory it can actually reach, and Doubao still draws travel supply and service support from Douyin Life Services, itself a challenger. xitter.cf/TechBuzzChina/status/2… 4. Tencent Seeks $5 Billion as AI Spending Drains Cash Tencent launched a $5 billion offshore bond sale, according to an October 13 report, after raising nearly $4.7 billion in June, with second-quarter free cash flow negative RMB 13.8 billion ($1.9 billion) against RMB 52.78 billion ($7.3 billion) in quarterly capital spending. It still held RMB 200 billion ($27.6 billion) in cash and more than that in term deposits, and some of the June borrowing matures in 2056, which points to matching long-lived AI assets with long-dated debt while leaving the cash pile free for operations, dividends, and deals. xitter.cf/TechBuzzChina/status/2… Three of the four trace the same pressure from different ends: capacity that is expensive and lumpy is reshaping how companies pay for and schedule it. Tencent is funding AI infrastructure with long-dated debt, CATL is steering lines toward storage and commercial customers because those orders run steadier, and Doubao's holiday numbers show an assistant gaining usage while the booking business and the supply behind it stay with someone else. The $200 million valuation with no named product sits at the other end of that market, where money is currently easier to find than evidence.
Tencent seeks $5 billion as AI spending drains cash Tencent has launched a $5 billion offshore bond sale, according to an October 13 report. That follows nearly $4.7 billion raised in June. Its Q2 free cash flow was negative RMB 13.8 billion (~$1.9B). Tencent said outflows included substantial AI-related prepayments for compute and infrastructure, with quarterly capital spending reaching RMB 52.78 billion (~$7.3B). But Tencent still held RMB 200 billion (~$27.6B) in cash and more than RMB 200 billion (~$27.6B) in term deposits at June-end. Some of its June borrowing stretches much further out: RMB 4 billion (~$556.5M) of offshore renminbi bonds mature in 2056. Our read: the point of borrowing now is to match long-lived AI assets with long-dated debt, not to plug a hole. Tencent can cover the $5 billion from one quarter of profit, so the cash pile stays free for operations, dividends, and deals while the bond market funds the buildout. H/t @TMTPostGlobal

Kuaishou’s Kling 4.0 supports 30-second continuous video generation Kuaishou has launched Kling 4.0 with support for 30-second single-shot continuous video. With competition in China’s AI video market intensifying, we suspect rival releases will now be judged partly on whether they can match that duration in one shot.

An analysis piece argues that Unitree's Wang Xingxing underestimated AI, while DeepSeek's Liang Wenfeng is now re-evaluating robotics. The piece makes a case for convergence between Chinese AI models and robotics, but we'd be careful about reading a collaboration into that. Neither company has announced a joint product.

AgiBot launches funding round at RMB 50 billion valuation AgiBot (智元) has launched a new funding round while postponing its IPO, signaling continued investor appetite for Chinese humanoid robotics leaders. But we'd be careful about reading the RMB 50 billion valuation as evidence of funding already secured. The round has been launched, not reported as closed.

151 apps, WeChat and Taobao among them, have refused to integrate with ByteDance's Doubao phone assistant. We'd be careful about treating Doubao as a distribution channel yet. The apps people actually use can still deny the assistant access, and 151 of them just did.

XPeng opened its full smart-vehicle stack to outside automakers at the Paris auto show, with CEO He Xiaopeng the only Chinese car CEO invited to speak. Automakers can license its vehicle platforms or individual pieces, including its Turing AI chip and production testing tools. Volkswagen has already put part of this offering into production. The first jointly developed model rolled off the line in March 2026, in a partnership covering electrical and electronic architecture through whole-vehicle development. XPeng spent more than RMB 11 billion (~$1.5B) on R&D in 2025, so we suspect it wants more automakers sharing the cost of developing these systems. The offering also includes factory tools that are easier to overlook than the chips and driving software. XPeng says its tools can reduce annual operating costs for production-line electrical testing by 95%. That gives prospective partners a specific cost claim to test against their own factories. $XPEV

Alibaba Targets Double 11 Presales for Qwen Product Launches Alibaba is organizing roughly 100 people to build Qwen-powered office and e-commerce versions, targeting a launch before Double 11 presales. That fits our earlier argument that Qwen's value to Alibaba comes from powering products such as Taobao and DingTalk. But we'd be careful about treating a launch ahead of presales as evidence of adoption. It doesn't yet tell us whether merchants or shoppers will use what the team builds. $BABA

DeepSeek has agreed to lead robotics-model startup Winverse AI's seed round, Bloomberg reported on October 12. Founded by former Tencent scientist Hu Han (胡瀚), Winverse is raising tens of millions of dollars at a post-money valuation of about $400 million. The deal hasn't closed, and the valuation and investor list could still change. DeepSeek already invested in Unitree's IPO, and Unitree says the two have signed a research cooperation MOU. Unitree's Wang Xingxing has said pure robotics companies can't handle the compute demands of training video-generation world models. Unitree tried that route in 2024, shelved it for a while, then increased its investment again in 2025. We suspect those training costs help explain DeepSeek's interest in backing a dedicated model team alongside its work with Unitree. DeepSeek's own latest funding round is reportedly nearing completion at at least RMB 80 billion, mainly for model training and data centers. Bloomberg says the funding could also support joint research with startups. Winverse hasn't disclosed a product yet, so the proposed investment would back an early research team with development still needed before its models can power robots doing real work. $TCEHY

China's smartphone shipments fell 15.4% year-on-year in Q3, but Huawei grew, gaining share in a shrinking market. We'd be careful about reading Huawei's growth as evidence that demand is recovering. The recap gives no shipment figures or vendor breakdown, so we can't tell how much share Huawei gained or which competitors lost ground.
