Some of the most valuable questions in sport are still the hardest to answer.
At Big Data LDN, Stats Perform Chief Scientist Patrick Lucey showed how deep sports data and new reasoning models can help quantify things that have traditionally been difficult to measure, from the value of a run in behind to how a team breaks down a low block.
The bigger opportunity is giving AI enough context to reason about the game properly, with up-to-date data, an objective language for sport and outputs that can be verified.
A glimpse at where sports AI is heading.
The 2026 Super League Man of Steel award is entering its final stages.
Throughout the season, Stats Perform’s Opta data has supported the judging panel with added context around the performances of the players in contention, helping inform analysis across the full campaign.
Great to see our work contributing to the process. 👏

Tottenham Women’s progress isn’t just showing up in the results. The data tells a much bigger story.
Under Martin Ho, Spurs have developed a more progressive style built around purposeful possession, breaking lines and creating overloads in dangerous areas.
Their 7-0 win over Crystal Palace was a clear example:
📊 42 shots
📊 82 touches in the opposition box
📊 A 14-pass move involving nine players for Amanda Nildén’s goal

What can deeper football data tell us about how a team creates danger?
@OptaAnalyst used metrics including expected pass completion (xP) and expected threat (xT) to examine Arsenal’s approach so far this season.
The analysis shows how Arsenal are finding passes that are relatively safe to complete, while still moving the ball into more threatening positions.
A good example of how Opta data can help explain the story behind performance.
