Speech providers mistranscribe around 1 in 4 medical terms. ❌
That's why we built Oak.
Introducing our new multilingual medical speech-to-text model. 🌳
Remember, remember, the 5th of November. 🎆
Your voice agent is live, but how does it actually get better?
Join @Speechmatics and Roark in London for an evening on building the voice AI improvement loop
Expect a fireside chat, live demos, Q&A, then drinks, pizza and conversation.
No treason, just reason. 😉

Building voice AI? I work in DevRel at @Speechmatics.
I share runnable demos, integration notes and tests with real-world audio from voice agents to talking games.

🇬🇧 UK AI is making its mark.
Great to see @NVIDIAAI spotlight @Speechmatics and Oak, our new medical speech-to-text model, built for real patient speech.

NEW: Speechmatics launched Oak, a medical speech-to-text model supporting 55+ languages.
In company-reported benchmarks, Oak captured 91% of medical terms across 11 languages, ranking #1 against 8 providers.
It also handles mid-conversation language switching.
Clinical conversations rarely follow a script. 🗣️
Patients switch languages. Multiple people contribute. Medical terminology gets complicated.
Oak supports 55+ languages, follows language changes automatically, and tracks who said what. 🌎
Oak also uses @NVIDIAAI to support efficient inference and self-hosted deployment, giving healthcare organizations more control over sensitive patient audio.
Meet multilingual, multiconversation medical speech-to-text for the real world.
Available now through our API.

Speed matters in a voice agent, but only if the transcript is right.
On @pipecat_ai's latest benchmark, Linden 1 reached 1.05% pooled semantic error at 369ms median finalization. ⚡
James shows what that balance looks like inside a live agent.

After a week with @livekit @fin_ai , @aquavoice ,@livekit, @cartesia , @AgoraIO, @Vapi_AI and many other builders across SF, one thing is clear:
Voice AI has moved past can it talk?
The real question is whether it understands well enough to act.
Try @Speechmatics. Stress it. Break it. Show us what you build.
Here is my summary below 👇
#SFTechWeek #VoiceAI
Golden Gate Bridge demos, voice AI x gaming hackathons, and ordering pretty much everything using voice.
San Francisco, it's been a week!
Our #SFTechWeek highlight? A demo-led panel with @LiveKit and @AquaVoice on the hard problems still tripping up voice agents, the crisis of benchmaxxing and what comes next.
See you soon, SF. 🌉

@Speechmatics vs the Golden Gate Bridge vs F-15s
One laptop.
Built-in mic.
No cleanup.
Wind, traffic, crowds, jets overhead.
I ran live transcription anyway.
Because STT doesnt just need to work in a quiet room.
It needs to get names, instructions and numbers right when the real world is doing everything it can to break it.
That’s the test.

Voice agents can sound smart right up until they mishear the one word that matters.
A postcode, account number, quick “yes” or even “not” can send the whole interaction off course.
Speechmatics' James Walker demos how Agent STT, powered by Linden 1, handles those moments in real time.

Voice AI is escaping the demo.
Stopped by Coffee @cartesia at #SFTechWeek today.
Humans still make the coffee.
But the voice tech is the interesting part.
From @Speechmatics side I think. Great voice AI isn’t just natural TTS.
It has to hear accurately, handle noise, interruptions, accents and know when you have actually finished speaking.
That whole loop has to disappear.
That’s when voice becomes an interface.
In SF building Voice AI this week?
Come find me. I want to see what you are building and, even better, what still breaks.

Gaming is one of the best stress tests for Voice AI.
Players interrupt.
Go off script.
Say weird things.
Change direction constantly.
And your agent still has to keep up.
At the Conversational AI x Gaming Hackathon at #SFTechWeek today with @playmanogames and Cartorga.
Really interesting seeing how both teams are pushing voice and AI into gaming, while from the @Speechmatics side we get to think about the part underneath it all:
Can the system actually understand the player?
This is where Voice AI gets fun.
TIME TO HACK

If voice becomes the default customer interface, speech-to-text stops being a feature.
It becomes infrastructure.
Great session from @rati_zv and @gavinjoyce at @fin_ai today.
The more capable voice agents become at taking real actions, the more important the first layer gets:
Did the agent actually understand the customer correctly?
That’s exactly the problem we’re focused on with Agent STT at @Speechmatics .
Accuracy, turn-taking, interruptions and latency suddenly matter a lot more when the AI can actually do something.

The more powerful voice agents become, the less room there is for close enough.
Great session tonight at #SFTechWeek with @aquavoice , @livekit and @Speechmatics .
The demos were fun, but the bigger point was serious:
If a voice agent can change your calendar, update systems, or cancel a flight, one bad transcription can have real consequences.
That is why accuracy, context, turn-taking and diarization matter just as much as latency.
Voice is becoming an interface.
Now it has to become one we can trust.
A voice agent can respond in milliseconds. But what happens if it misheard the sentence that came before? 🎧🤔
That tension sits at the center of @Pipecat_ai’s new benchmark of 23 real-time STT models.
They compared latency with semantic accuracy, and found there is no universal best model. What matters depends on the conversation you are trying to build.
For developers, that is probably the more useful benchmark.
