I am very sorry to hear of Norm's passing. Although I didn't have the chance to meet him in person, I enjoyed his writing on math education in California; e.g., he wrote this excellent article in the LA Times. My condolences to his family. latimes.com/opinion/story/20…
I’m Dr. Norman Matloff’s daughter, and it is with great sadness that I share that my father passed away earlier in June, surrounded by his family.
He faced his cancer diagnosis with unflagging optimism and never stopped pursuing his passions of writing, mentoring students, and enjoying life’s simple pleasures. He has left behind a legacy: generations of UC Davis graduates in his 40+ years teaching, open source software and tutorials available to anybody, a body of technical work in research publications, software packages, and books.
The lively discourse that he had with all of you on this platform gave him great pleasure, and he felt genuine connections with many of you here.
He will be so very missed. May his memory be a perpetual blessing.
All of these are aspects that we have always taken into account when designing Smartick sessions. If you would like to try it this summer, here is our offer: 15 minutes a day. Inspired by ideas shared by people like Barbara Oakley and @rastokke smartick.com/lp/pvhn26-us/
Just spoke to the most incredible group of Stanford/MIT interns at @gauntletai about the science of learning and the future of adaptive learning platforms. Brilliant questions and thinking about hard problems around retrieval, spacing, interleaving, cognitive load and elaboration. The kids are alright 👏
Mathematics, perhaps? 😊
Dear @OECDEduSkills - Please stop with the 21st century skills nonsense! You - including or maybe especially @SchleicherOECD - have done enough damage. Spend your time and our money studying things that actually exist and that can make a difference.

If there’s one thing we do, it’s encourage practicing math every day. 15 minutes.
Three things that seem to be contributing to poor math achievement:
1. Multiple strategies for novice learners.
Recommendation: Choose an efficient strategy that generalizes easily to (e.g.) larger numbers, teach it well, give lots of practice on it.
2. Too much focus on manipulatives & pictures.
Recommendation: Fluency with abstract symbols sets kids up for later success. Move quickly to the abstract - that's where the majority of practice should be.
3. Not enough practice.
Recommendation: Give lots of practice and then give more. It's how we get good at math.

Love this. We believe the same at @Smartick: short, optimized learning sessions can be incredibly powerful. Not every child will attend an Alpha School, but technology can bring high-quality learning to millions.
So glad to find @daisychristo here. Part of the Smartick team reading Reforming Lessons, by @NickGibbUK
This is a great article by @HKorbey educationnext.org/practice-p… and it touches a universal concern: how to promote routine use of math platforms. We always tell parents: Smartick isn’t magic—it takes daily effort. Some kids have done it for 1,000+ days in a row.
Great article. Very @smartick

We love learning with every book she writes.
My new book about VAR is out on 7 Nov.
It's about football.
It's also about authority, rationality & technology in the 21st century.

I'm also giving away a free copy. Retweet this post and I'll pick a winner on Fri 25 Oct.
Very interesting article on the effectiveness of short math homework, rather than long and less frequent ones. A very Smartick approach. phys.org/news/2024-09-reveal…
Life is great when you reach out to a family in California to ask how they knew about us and they tell us about Barbara Oackley´s book. #Mathematics youtube.com/watch?v=Bbc4A6u4…
