One of the many advantages of the San Francisco Fire Department having a full-time, 24-hour Public Information Office is that every Public Information Officer is first and foremost a public servant.
Today, Captain Jonathan Baxter — who is also a Paramedic — witnessed an elderly community member suffer a mechanical fall and immediately jumped into action to provide care.
Members of Medic 60 and ALS Engine 36 arrived on scene shortly after to take over patient care.
This is another example of how the San Francisco Fire Department prides itself on being ready and prepared for whatever the day brings.
At approximately 4:15 PM this afternoon, the San Francisco Fire Department received multiple 9-1-1 calls for a reported kite / windsurfer in distress under the Golden Gate Bridge.
The San Francisco Fire Department launched a marine and ground-based rescue operation. Units from Rescue Boat 35, Rescue Boat 35A, and Rescue Watercraft 1 made contact with the individual and confirmed there was no medical issue, the individual was in distress and unable to continue without assistance.
San Francisco Fire Department personnel assisted the individual onto Rescue Boat 35, where they were evaluated by a San Francisco Fire Department Paramedic. The individual was brought to shore and declined any further medical care or assistance.
Safety Reminder: Always know your surroundings on the Bay, be aware of tidal flows, carry a means of communication, and always wear a life preserver / life jacket.
approximately 4:00 PM this afternoon, the San Francisco Fire Department received a report of an individual requiring rescue in the Bay off of Crissy Field.
The individual was contacted by San Francisco Rescue Boat (RB) 35, and RB 35A, and Rescue Watercraft 1. Prior to our arrival on scene, the individual had been picked up by a private vessel.
The individual was transferred from the private vessel to RB35 where the individual was evaluated by San Francisco Fire Department Paramedics and brought to shore. Once ashore, the individual declined further medical care and assistance.
Safety Reminder:
When windsurfing or participating in other Bay activities, always know your location on the Bay. Let someone on shore know where you will be, always wear a personal flotation device such as a life jacket, and carry a means of communication.
On October 12, 2026, just before 3:00 PM, the San Francisco Fire Department responded to multiple reports of an individual, possibly multiple individuals, requiring rescue at Mile Rock Beach in San Francisco.
SFFD immediately launched both water and land-based rescue resources, locating the individual(s) from the land side. Our first-arriving crews began setting up for a rope rescue as Rescue Boat 35 and Rescue Boat 35A arrived on scene.
Rescue boats deployed rescue swimmers who made contact with the individual, who was stranded on rocky cliffside along the broken shoreline below a protected cliff off the Coastal Trail.
Ground crews were then able to reach the individual along with Rescue boat swimmers, who, along with our SFFD paramedics, assisted the individual back up the cliffside to the Coastal Trail where they were evaluated.
One individual required rescuing by San Francisco firefighters; another individual declined assistance.
This is a strong reminder to:
- Stay on designated trails; never go off-trail
- Never turn your back on the ocean
- Always adhere to signage and use only designated access points
