The Idefix rover launching to the Martian moons on JAXA #MMX tomorrow is a chunky 25kg beast on Earth, but with g 2000x lower, it will only have the mass of a single grape on Phobos - just 12g. How fast can it go without leaping into space? See my story in the comments. #Mars

EU to Kushner: Fuck off. “There will be no simultaneous negotiations on European security until the war [against Ukraine] is over. Besides, we know what the Russians mean by that and it will not happen.” ft.com/content/1731d88c-fba2…

Falcon9 does not need to be replaced. @SpaceX could choose to licence its manufacture to a second source, like Intel used to do with x86 processors with AMD. (But avoid the legal travails those firms had.)
By most any measure, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket is by far the most successful launch vehicle ever flown. But if the company has its way, this rocket will soon retire. What could replace it—and is anyone else ready for a world without Falcon 9? sciam.com/article/could-spac…

A B-1 bomber suffered landing gear failure at Edwards AFB. As aircraft was skidding down dry lake bed, tower controller asked if they needed assistance. Through the shower of smoke, dust, and sparks came the response from B-1 bomber crew... "Dunno - we ain't done crashing' yet."

This pilot is a stud and should get huge kudos from JetBlue. I hope they don’t question him or bury him in paperwork. Declaring an emergency is no small matter but he did not hesitate.
This is why we call it the “Pilot In Command” This happened in the same vicinity where the ill-fated Lear Jet hit the storm cell. JetBlue pilot en route from Fort Lauderdale to Austin says to ATC: “So you're gonna make us go through a, uh, severe thunderstorm?” The captain then commanded the situation and overrode the ATC: “So we declare an emergency, making a left turn heading 260 for severe weather avoidance.” Sometimes piloting demands a specific set of traits - decisiveness, independent judgment, and the backbone to reject an instruction when it doesn’t feel right. Refusing the assigned heading showed exactly that kind of assertive leadership. Whoever is pilot monitoring must make these tough calls but ultimately, the captain is the final authority and ultimately accountable for every soul on board.

As a computer scientist in AI (and also a tech founder), I see it the other way around. People who have no idea how AI works trying to draw relations and conclusions about its abilities telling me I don’t know what I’m talking about. My stance shouldn’t be controversial, AI is a computer program, a mathematical model doing large matrix statistics, and it is impossible for it to give rise to feelings, desires, emotions, awareness, understanding, or consciousness, and comparing it to biological systems is foolish. And before you start telling me about the people who are saying it who are experts… they have an agenda. Even the “Godfather of AI” (more like “God Complex”) is selling books and fear sells, as does popularity, interviews, and making batshit crazy claims. Most of the tooling that people use to build and inference models is open source. You can read it yourself (if you know how) or you can have agent do it and explain it to you. I can assure you, its design is to emulate and generalize on its training data, not be alive. So I’m curious how many people who know very little about how AI works will argue with me saying how little I know about consciousness, biological processes, or that my stance is somehow influenced by me being a tech bro / CEO in AI…
Since AI took off people have been turning to computer scientists as if they’re experts on everything. Their expertise is in computers. Not the human mind, intelligence, consciousness, politics, economics, etc. The reverence they’re treated with is very anti-science

My favorite obituary.
Patrick Stewart. Turned up so early and so unobtrusively to be a star in the reasonably priced car, we mistook him for a delivery driver and asked him to go round the back. Took his hat off and said, “But I’m the captain of the Enterprise”. Fucking nice guy.

A bizarre stunt where a U.S. military aircraft conducted an alarmingly low flyover of D.C. for Donald Trump’s Halloween party has backfired spectacularly. thedailybeast.com/trumps-gha…

RIP Patrick Stewart. What an actor. I still can’t believe he agreed to do this scene. And he didn’t even mind when I ruined every take. Legend.

Over-the-air updates are common for EVs, but not, perhaps, for nuclear-powered EVs on Mars. This update had a profound impact on science return.
An AI-based software update that delivered an autonomous mission planning capability to NASA's Perseverance in late 2023 boosted the rover's science productivity by more than 10%, engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory said in a paper published today. aerospaceamerica.aiaa.org/fi…

this is a terrible idea, as outlined by Dan Dennett in one of his last essays: theatlantic.com/technology/a…
We believe voice is the most natural way to interact with intelligence, so we created Dessa, the most authentic full-duplex speech model ever built. Talking with it feels like talking with a person…full of emotion, nuance, pauses, and a natural cadence. block.xyz/dessa

Who is bankrolling Nigel Farage's party? What interests are they seeking to advance? Are they acting in Britain's best interests? Reform UK are engulfed in sleaze and scandal. Labour will protect our democracy from foreign influence. independent.co.uk/news/uk/po…
