A hack I learned at the NSA:
Trash is full of phenomenal intelligence.
And there's one place your competitor produces the best trash - Glassdoor[1].
Disgruntled employees complain about:
- Cultural shifts
- Strategic directions
- Customers
Here's my system for trash analysis:
- Pull reviews (manually or scrape)
- Load via PDF into Claude
- Prompt for summaries
The results then go into my Judgment Log on each competitor and notable findings go into my Competitor Dashboard.
If you want my Glassdoor Prompt and my entire guide to Competitive Research and Intelligence, sign up at the link below (or in my bio).
Comes out next week (and it's free). :)
[1]It should go without saying (but this is Twitter), I'm not saying the people are trash. The complaints they're putting on Glassdoor are a trash stream from their company's communications leaking out into the world.
Taxes are the largest expense in life:
You'll pay $533k.
But you should know:
- The US spends ~$8 Trillion on you
- You're taxed more when you spend income
- ~50% of the US pay zero income tax
- Wealthy could pay 70%+ of their wealth in taxes
So here's ways to lower taxes:
- Move to a low tax location
- Pick a career with tax advantages
- Estate planning
- Understand and use the tax code
- Take advantage of tax incentives
But the big question: Is tax planning even worth it?
The government provides a lot, but also wastes a lot.
So what do you think?
If interesting I can break down how I thought about taxes (and what we did) after selling my company for over $200M.
Just reply with questions or enthusiasm and I’ll oblige. :)
Something we're not ready for:
The cost to get a customer through sales and marketing is up: 108.9%!
And it's going to get worse.
Because:
- We've had no new marketing channels since 2016
- So everyone floods them
- And AI will flood them more
But here's how I'd avoid this:
Provide as much value for free as possible.
Sounds crazy, but costs are only up:
- 55.2% for getting customers via a free product
- 39.8% for those who convert via video and podcasts
So invest in free.
There's a lot more I could go deeper on. Any ideas?
If interesting, just reply with questions or enthusiasm and I'll oblige with more content. :)
My best tool to create content that made over $20M:
"Emotional Resonance" maps
When you script an ad, webinar, or sales pitch map how the viewer should feel as they watch it.
Emotional humans buy so much more, so your flat content's losing you money.
Here's how this works...
For every script, I map where a viewer should feel:
- Positive (hope, excited, joy, etc.)
- Negative (fomo, anxiety, despair, etc.)
But here's the secret - the line should arc up or down (ideally both) and end at the highest positive point, which is your CTA.
After doing this 100+ times, there's really only three arcs in business content:
1. Slow, Positive Build
Here the viewer gets progressively more excited. It's the easiest. Aim for this if you're new.
2. Anxiety-Fomo-Hope Sales Arc
Here the viewer gets anxious and fomo about not having your product. This should be most sales pitches.
3. Hope-Despair-Triumph Fairytale Arc
Here the viewer roots for a character (which could be them), but then bad things happen. Then BOOM, they're going to make it (with your product).
You can also make these much more precise down to the second, but keep it simple at first.
Anyways - there's a lot more I could go deeper on.
If interesting, just reply with questions or enthusiasm and I'll oblige with more content. :)
This is backstage Saturday after @AlexHormozi crushed the launch of his new book - $100M Leads.
500k+ people already have it.
150k hardcovers are sold out.
It's the greatest book on marketing I've read. The cool part - It's 100% free.
You should take one deep lesson from this:
The age of giving away intense amounts of value for free and monetizing elsewhere is here.
Free tools.
Free books.
Free services.
Free products.
"But Patrick - isn't this just inbound or content marketing?"
Sort of - but imagine inbound marketing on steroids.
Then double it.
"Ok - but why?"
One word - noise.
Three more words - customer acquisition costs.
Customer acquisition costs are up 120%+ over the past decade. Everyone and their mother has an ebook. Everyone's doing sales. Everyone's running ads.
So you can't just "stand out" anymore.
You need people to trust you.
And you need to build that trust quickly.
The best way to do that is:
Provide 5-10x more value than your competitors for free.
Provide so much value people feel bad and grateful for how much they're getting from you. Because then when you ask them for something, they do it (or at least hear you out).
I've played with giving away value for a decade and wrote a book on freemium. It was a large part to my $200M+ exit.
So if you're curious for a framework to identify what to give away for free or the data on how magical freemium can be, just send me $100 to...
Kidding - just reply that you want it and I'll do a post or three here.
For now though, go read $100M Leads.
It's truly impeccable.
And Alex, @DrKashey, and @LeilaHormozi - couldn't be prouder of you three for this launch and just to know you fools. Smooches.
My first job I hunted targets at the NSA.
They gave me:
- Tools to analyze anything
- Tools I couldn't get anywhere else
- Tools I used to build a company that sold for over $200M
Here are the 4 tools I now use for analyzing any market, company, or opportunity like a spy 👇
With all this information, you can now:
A. Give up because the market's bad
or
B. Go deeper (outline for insurance below) and start talking to customers
You also saved years of bumbling around trying to pursue an industry like most do with one week of work. 💪
Remember - your job is to seek and increase your leverage.
You can't do that without analysis.
Hope this was helpful. 🙏
If 1k people bookmark or reply to the first tweet with "deeper please" (below), I'll go into getting the data or do a course.

Ever argue with your wife about:
"Do I look fat?"
"No phones at dinner"
"Most people keep the toilet seat down"
You likely just talk in circles.
But I win these arguments - with data.
Here's exactly how for less than $10 per argument👇
Using mTurk I found:
- 96% said she was NOT fat
- 86% have phones at dinner
- 63% don't care about the toilet seat
And all this data only cost me $29.
I'd say that's worth it to win. 😂
Yes - I actually do this.
Yes - I still rarely win.
Yes - I'm a delight. :)
Over ten years I collected 10M+ data points through surveys. If you want me to go deeper, just reply with questions.
You should also retweet this thread. Keeps me doing more. xitter.cf/Patticus/status/168927…
