Why are UK holidays so unaffordable? How do families decide where to go on holiday? What are families doing to save money? DCMS @HoCcommitteesUK asked @VickyFlipFlop and @dromomaniac these questions to open our inquiry into the UK Tourism industry.

Thank you @Rebecca_SPaul for calling an urgent question on the holiday tax. “If you tax something, you get less of it, so we tax tourism, we get less tourism - it’s not complicated. And less tourists mean fewer jobs.” Job losses in hospitality hit young people hardest #StopTheHolidayTax

We're delighted to welcome Marc Bolland, Lead Non-Executive Director at the @DWPgovuk as a speaker at this year's #TourismPolicyConference2026. Marc will explore "Tackling NEETs: Getting Young People into Work," looking at what employers can do to open doors for young people not in education, employment or training, and how business and government can work together to tackle youth unemployment. He will share ideas on creating clear routes into work, the role of the Government's #YouthGuarantee, and how sectors like hospitality and tourism can lead the way. A former Chief Executive of Marks & Spencer and Morrisons, and former Chief Operating Officer of Heineken, Marc is the founder of the charity Movement to Work, which has delivered over 200,000 opportunities for young people facing barriers to work. In his DWP role, he convenes Chief Executives across sectors to help expand opportunity and tackle youth unemployment. With a business leader's perspective on the #VisitorEconomy workforce, Marc brings valuable insight into how employers can build the talent pipeline the sector needs for the future. Join us on 17 November for a full day of keynotes, Q&A and debate on the issues shaping the future and growth of #UKtourism. ⏰ GET TICKETS 👉 lnkd.in/eCNXnBcK

Your home should be yours to pass on. The @Conservatives will: 🏠 Scrap Stamp Duty when you buy your home 🏡 Scrap the Family Homes Tax while you live in it 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Abolish Inheritance Tax on the family home when you pass it to your children or grandchildren People who work hard, save and build something for their family should be rewarded - not punished with more tax. This is about backing aspiration, home ownership and the next generation.

"It's the worst piece of legislation I've ever seen." 'One size fits all' sounds simple, but is the 182-day rule failing Wales? @PascUK's Executive Chair Alistair Handyside thinks so. #Tourism #Hospitality #Wales #182DayRule #UKPolitics @ProducerOllie @MsJoKiernan

Well said. As usual, @WelshLabour & @Plaid_Cymru jumped in with both feet into damaging a crucial sector they have no understanding of. They don’t get proportionality and nuance and Plaid’s current consultation shows that they have not learnt anything.

Holiday cottages and self catering are overwhelmingly SMEs managing & running properties which are not second homes or suitable for housing. They want to pay their fair share of taxes - and do, by registering as businesses for rates and VAT. They are not the same as holiday lets. Fully agree with @PascUK here - proportionate tax and regulation are key telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

It's not a 'far right nostalgic vision of Britain' that 'never really existed'. It's part of everyday rural life. Part of my life! (Though admittedly not all the labradors are black and not all the beer is warm!). dailymail.com/news/article-1…

Finally received a written response from a Govt Treasury Minister - first one so far - about VAT rates for UK hospitality businesses. It is so patronising and clueless, I don't even know where to start. But if you care about small independent restaurants, cafes, bars and hotels in your area staying open, please join @UKHofficial's #VATsTheProblem campaign - backed by leading chefs. Write to your own MP leading up to the Budget on 28th October. 3 or 4 establishments are closing every single day, that's a lot of people out of work!

For the first time I’ve spoken about my daughter having neurosurgery at four months old. Why? Because Labour plans to tax families who have to stay in hotels to be near our children while they’re in hospital. It’s wrong & it’s cruel @lisanandy. thesun.co.uk/news/40504192/l…

This is remarkable. For some people the tourist tax seems a blunt (and stupid) mechanism to generate tax revenue from wealthy tourists. Most of us know it will hammer our local tourism industry (small hotels, B&Bs, holiday lets, camp sites). But, as demonstrated here, it will also impact a family who have travelled miles for specialist healthcare for loved ones. Its insane.

What is Labour's problem with the Tourism industry? The government is piling on a whole new tourism tax on top of the swathes of additional taxes and regulations that have already disproportionately impacted this vital sector that employs millions of people - many of them young.
