ALT How are out-of-state data centers driving up your electric bill? Between 2024 and 2025 alone, regional grid operator PJM advanced nearly $12 billion in new transmission infrastructure largely driven by data center growth in Northern Virginia. The catch? Under current regional rules, everyday households are footing the bill for infrastructure built to power giant tech developments. Here is what that means for Marylanders: Paying more than $1.3 billion, plus billions more in utility profits, as those investments are recovered over future decades. The Maryland Office of People’s Counsel is working at both the state and federal levels to push reforms to these outdated cost-allocation rules. We believe massive, multi-billion-dollar tech operations should pay for their own grid upgrades. You shouldn’t have to.
