Introducing our new work, Vigils.
oxman.com/projects/vigils
For a century, the color of what we wear has come from petrochemicals. Synthetic dyes shade nearly every fiber that touches our skin. Even natural fibers like cotton and silk, marketed as clean, reach our bodies by way of chemical-heavy dye baths and industrial fixatives, leaving behind effluent that lingers in ecosystems long after the garment is discarded.
Vigils is a series of capes whose color is not applied but grown. We engineer bacteria to produce indigo and melanin pigments, then let them work directly on the surface of a 3D-knitted silk textile. When the process is complete, the cells are washed away, leaving only the pigment they have grown into the fiber.
Vigils questions how a textile comes into being. In place of the industrial dye pipeline, it introduces a manufacturing process that unites synthetic biology with computational fabrication: engineered microorganisms working in concert with CNC knitting machines, in a workflow where biology and robotics operate together at the resolution of a single thread.
We believe the future of fashion is not more sustainable versions of the same industrial paradigm. It is a fundamentally different relationship with the living world; one in which growth replaces application, biology replaces petrochemistry, and every textile becomes a singular expression of life. Vigils is our first step, and its logic extends far beyond color.
More to come. Time to grow ..
I love you Batman!
I just spoke at length to @EPotterMD and I have asked her for all of the supporting documents, emails, call records, etc which she has agreed to provide. I found her and her story totally credible. @UHC has publically called her a liar, and UHC’s general counsel has told my CLO that Dr. Potter is not telling the truth.
We have asked UHC to explain with particularity what Dr. Potter has said and/or written that is false. They have yet to respond to this request.
I took down my original post on this matter because UHC’s outside counsel told my CLO that I was wrong and that Dr. Potter was not telling the truth.
Based on what I have heard so far, I believe that Dr. Potter is telling the truth and that UHC appears to have denied coverage for a necessary post-surgical overnight stay and interfered with a surgeon mid-operation without good reason. They have also threatened the doctor with defamation and significant financial liabilities. And they have complained to the @SECGov about me.
I await UHC’s side of the story and supporting facts before I can conclusively form a view on what has happened here.
In the meantime, I have told Dr. Potter that I will cover her legal expenses to defend her from UHC’s claims, and to make sure that she has proper representation so that this is a fair fight.
Stay tuned. This should be interesting. And there is a possibility that good will come from this. Healthcare and our insurance system is in trouble and needs a reboot.
Sharing the voices of my team members reflecting upon the nature of design, and designing with nature. Here is to a year of true synergy between the grown and the made. Here's to joy and peace for all sentient beings. May we come together to build a better and meaningful world in 2025.
My wish for the world of Design in the New Year is to consider reincarnation instead of recycling. In the spirit of timeless designs and timely technologies, here is an image from project Oᵒ we'd like to share.
A Roman sandal from circa 400 CE (left) next to the Oᵒ concept shoe. Both are crafted from a single material addressing varying mechanical and environmental requirements while fully biodegrading in soil. After six weeks in a soil microbiome, the O° shoe will require approximately one to two years to decompose—leaving behind zero microplastics and zero pollutants (right.)
We will continue this work in 2025, with the goal of designing and delivering such products at scale, beginning with a 2025 capsule collection. Please stay tuned! To learn more about O° please visit oxman.com/projects/o0
Merry Old World, Happy New Year!
In pure and introspective acts of reflective gesturing, it is as if Horowitz is replaying the Mozart piano concerto 23 2nd mov, musically depicting yet again the image of cosmic melancholy... Here is to gratitude and to giving ...

(And ... I love and adore you, my precious Pauline, for your taste in being ...)
Here is the O° one-minute version.
Meet O° – a collection of shoes and textiles whose creation and reincarnation starts and ends with biology.
100% biodegradable. 0% petrochemicals. 0% microplastics. 0% forever chemicals. No assemblies. No glues.
Here’s to a future where products can grow from—and reincarnate into—plant matter.
OXMAN is initiating discussions with potential partners, investors, and brand collaborators to bring the production of O° shoes and textiles to scale and to market. We look forward to hearing from you.

I was thrilled to join the @megalopolismov family for its NYC premiere screening last night. It has been a real honor to contribute to the FFC's "fable" film.
Below is a link to our project Man-nahata which included urban study models for the city of MEGALOPOLIS, designed by OXMAN for FFC's film. The models were presented at SFMOMA in 2022 as part of the "OXMAN Architects" exhibition curated by Jennifer Dunlop Fletcher.
We look forward to sharing our new work with all of you at the end of this month. Thank you for your patience and support as we wrap up our projects for our very own "premier"!
