The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report published by The Times of India on 24 October 2026 regarding the alleged sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl in Siddipet district, Telangana. According to reports, seven persons, including three minors, allegedly sexually assaulted the girl after taking her to a neighbouring village. The accused have reportedly been arrested, and an investigation is underway. NCW Chairperson Smt. Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Director General of Police, Telangana, seeking a fair, comprehensive and time-bound investigation, strict action under the POCSO Act and other applicable laws, and examination of the individual roles of all accused, including the three minors in accordance with juvenile justice provisions. The Commission has also sought medical care, psychological counselling, legal assistance and rehabilitation for the survivor, along with strict protection of her identity and privacy. An Action Taken Report (ATR) has been sought within seven days. Sexual violence against children is unacceptable. Women-led farmer producer organisations are emerging as key drivers of inclusive agricultural growth in India, with nearly 80 per cent of women-led Farmer Producer Companies having more than 600 members. The findings were highlighted in the sixth edition of the State of the FPO Sector 2026 report, launched by the National Association for Farmer Producer Organisations in partnership with NABARD. The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance of a deeply disturbing media report published by NDTV on 22 October 2026 regarding the brutal murder of 40-year-old Sushma Devi in Udhampur, Jammu & Kashmir. She was allegedly set on fire inside her residence by her stepson, Moksh Verma, who reportedly poured diesel on her. After sustaining approximately 70% burn injuries, she succumbed to her injuries at GMC Jammu. NCW Chairperson Smt. The minor was reportedly abducted and sexually assaulted by a group of men near the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. She went into labour at the spot and delivered a baby, who was subsequently declared dead at a local hospital. NCW Chairperson Smt. Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Director General of Police (DGP), Rajasthan, seeking the immediate identification and arrest of all accused, a fair and time-bound investigation, and strict action under the POCSO Act, BNS and other applicable laws. The Commission has also called for the preservation of forensic evidence, specialised medical care, trauma counselling, protection and legal assistance for the minor survivor, along with compensation as per applicable norms.
