ARTS NEWS • Masamvu, Rodgers Family Donate 10 Hectares to Revive Mutare Art Gallery
Celebrated visual artist Misheck Masamvu and the Rodgers family have donated 10 hectares of land to the National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) setting the stage for the revival of the Mutare Art Gallery.
The land, officially handed over on 1 September 2026, is located at Mount Worsley Estate in the Drifters Farm area, less than 10km from Mutare CBD.
Plans for the site include art production studios, exhibition spaces and educational facilities, creating a new home for visual arts in Manicaland.
The development effectively gives the Mutare Art Gallery a second life after it permanently closed its doors on 31 December 2024 due to serious operational and financial challenges.
Masamvu is one of Zimbabwe’s leading contemporary visual artists and co-founder of the Village Unhu art collective.
The handover was overseen by Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Lieutenant General (Retired) Ambassador Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe, who described the partnership as a major boost for Zimbabwe’s creative and cultural economy.
From a gallery closing to 10 hectares dedicated to art, this could be the beginning of an exciting new chapter for visual arts in Mutare.

Zimbabwe’s Pavilion has been officially opened at the prestigious Venice Biennale, marking another proud milestone for the country on the global arts stage.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Mr Nicholas Moyo said Zimbabwe’s participation reflects Government’s deliberate policy position of promoting culture as a pillar of national identity, pride and soft power.
“The Government of Zimbabwe’s support of the pavilion is not a gesture. It is a policy position. It reflects Government’s recognition that culture is central to national identity, national pride, as well as the soft power for a sovereign nation in the 21st century,” he said.
National Gallery of Zimbabwe Board Chairperson, Justice (Rtd) Maphios Cheda emphasized the importance of strengthening public-private partnerships in growing the arts sector into a viable economic industry.
“We encourage more people to participate in the art sector and regard it as business and an industry,” he said.
Zimbabwean artist Michele Mathison described the Biennale as one of the world’s most important contemporary art platforms.
“This is what they call the Olympic Games of the art world. It is an incredibly special opportunity to show your work to a very, very large audience,” she said.
This year’s pavilion, themed “Second Nature”, showcases powerful Zimbabwean narratives through contemporary installations and artistic expression, as the country continues to expand its cultural diplomacy and grow the creative economy on the international stage.

Taking place in Venice, Italy, the Biennale brings together nearly 100 national pavilions and remains one of the most prestigious platforms in contemporary art globally. Zimbabwe’s participation now in its eighth appearance, continues to position the country as a key player in the international cultural landscape.
Through this strategic engagement, Zimbabwe is amplifying its cultural footprint and creating valuable opportunities for local artists to connect with global audiences, curators, and collectors.
