Memory matters in non-equilibrium dynamics.
We observe a Kovacs effect in the electro-orientation of nanoparticle suspensions and use it to design faster relaxation protocols.

From undergraduate mechanics labs to modern nonequilibrium thermodynamics
The brachistochrone is one of the most famous optimization problems in classical physics.
It is fascinating to see how a 17th-century variational problem reappears in modern nonequilibrium physics — now not in space, but in thermodynamic state space.
I find it especially rewarding that a problem my students explore in the lab has now inspired of our research.
Feedback very welcome!

We are happy to share our new preprint, done in collaboration with @LRodriguezArco. Janus #microdroplets rotate tens of times per second when trapped with our optical tweezers!!

Finally published in @softmatter!

In fact, rotating trapped particles are cool (though sometimes they heat up). Check this out!

Aristotle knew anomalous thermalization occurs in freezing water: "The fact that the water has previously been warmed contributes to its freezing quickly: for so it cools sooner". The new paper by Antonio and colleagues digs into this and related problems

At the microscale, fluctuations strongly affect the energetics of small systems. It is well known that all involved quantities become stochastic, but most studies mainly focused on averages and standard deviation. nature.com/articles/s42005-0…

Linked is an arXiv preprint of an invited perspective submitted to Applied Phys Lett.
I present an experimental viewpoint on Brownian colloids interacting with an optothermal field. Also discussed are emerging prospects, including soft-photonics
