Did you know that when we dropped the bomb on Nagasaki, it was the largest Christian population in Japan?
Nagasaki had by far the largest and most concentrated Christian community in Japan, rooted in its history as the entry point for Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century and the home of "Hidden Christians" (Kakure Kirishitan) who preserved Catholicism underground during centuries of persecution. The majority of Japan's Catholics lived in or near Nagasaki.
Nagasaki's population was around 240,000–260,000 in 1945.
Nationwide, Japanese Catholics numbered around 100,000–110,000 in the early 1940s.
Of these, roughly half (about 50,000–63,000, based on 1929 figures of ~63,698 in Nagasaki Prefecture, with many in the city itself) were in the Nagasaki area.
