I hope you enjoy it as much as I did writing it.
Happy July 4th! 🇺🇸
I can't believe it but @CharlesSchwab is following @Fidelity down the morally bankrupt path of charging retail investors insane fees to trade ETFs.
Instead of $100 it's going to be $50.
So maybe they're 1/2 as evil?
"Yes we're screwing over our own customers but at least we're not as bad as @Fidelity!"
Would be embarrassed to work at either shop.
Gross.
Likely waterfall of what CEOs would do if politicians made stock buybacks illegal.
First, private companies would be less likely to go public, as they can't manage dilution.
Current public CEOs would, in likely order:
1. Pay higher dividends
2. Pay special dividends
3. Pursue more mergers and acquisitions
4. Hoard more cash
5. Pay down debt
6. Overinvestment in marginal R&D and capex
or just go private.
Accomplish what you're looking for? No, of course not, but it sounds good as a boogeyman!
That's not how any of this works.
Perhaps you mean share issuance and stock based compensation, which is the exact opposite of stock buybacks.

Why will most institutions underperform a low cost endowment style ETF?
The FOMO of the bottom 90% of institutions will cause them to YOLO even more into privates, resulting in....
...even more underperformance.
They see the results of UNC and Harvard this year and think "that should be us!"
Then they pay consultants, and 2&20, and next thing you know have most their portfolio in privates when the black horseman comes...
Eventually they should give up, but by then the damage will be done.
Harvard University’s endowment jumped to a record $68 billion bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Would be a fun course for college or even HS kids.
Each week, you're assigned a task with a high chance of failure.
Next month, we will celebrate the 20 year anniversary of @CambriaFunds. 🎉🎉🎉
We last posted this chart when we crossed $2 billion in AUM; now at $5 billion, I thought I would update it with some more hate, though for some reason most have disappeared.
Maybe it's because our strategies are having one of their best years ever, or maybe haters eventually find quant investing boring...But I miss you guys. You keep lively around here!
Without further ado, here are some of my favorites...
"I like Meb and his diverse guests but he keeps saying “ Y’all’s”, A silly and ignorant way of speaking." (July 2026)
"Meb Faber hosts a really interesting podcast but almost all of his investments look like shit." (May 2025)
"Not exactly iShares for sure. I trust the stoner Meb Faber a bit more." (Sep 2024) Is this a compliment?
"I couldn't agree more with your points on Meb's doubtful credibility." (July 2023)
"Look, I appreciate that you gave away nine previous books for free, and I enjoy your podcast… wait, hold on — this new book is $76?! Are you crazy?!" (2026)
"The Cambria lineup feels like backtest catnip." (2024)
"Classic example of overthinking a portfolio to justify asset management fees. Instead of buying VOO or VT and sleeping well, you're paying 60+ bps to constantly rebalance into underperforming foreign value." — r/Bogleheads (2024)
The biggest charitable donation of all time from @elonmusk ..and these two hate it.
Predictable, but sad to see. @karaswisher goes as far to say "it's a ridiculous waste of money" and "only one share?" and "I fault him for it".
I used to think when you pick a political party your IQ goes down 20% now I think it's closer to 50%.

Value is still out there.
Investors don't have to pay S&P 500 prices to own companies that return cash to shareholders. SYLD, FYLD and EYLD all trade at steep discounts to the index on earnings, book, sales and cash flow.

"Dividend nomads" aka people who don't understand how dividends work.
About 40% of pros and 75% of individuals think dividends and passive income are a magical bonus.

bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
We did a survey on how dividends work and received thousands of responses...
Q: "Which of the following best describes how dividends work for a stock investor?"
A1: "A stock yields 5%. The stock is trading at $100 and pays a $5 cash dividend. After distribution, the investor now has a stock worth $95 and a $5 cash dividend."
A2: "A stock yields 5%. The stock is trading at $100 and pays a $5 cash dividend. After distribution, the investor now has a stock worth $100 and a $5 cash dividend."
The good news? Meb's audience (mostly) gets its.
90% of pros understand how dividends work, and 80% of individuals. 👏
HOWEVER, for the broad-based audience, the results are DISMAL.
60% of pros understand how dividends work (despite 90% rating their knowledge at "average to very good")...
Only 25% of individuals understand how dividends work.
You read that right, 75% of individuals think that dividends are free money paid out like an allowance or bonus...
This agrees with my experience over the last 20 years.
Most individuals, and a non-trivial number of professionals, do not understand the most basic input in all of investing!
This explains everything from the irrational preference for dividends to predatory offerings focused on paying out magically high dividends to hope and dreams of passive income.
We will publish a longer paper on this soon, but in the meantime, stay tuned for a great podcast on the topic dropping shortly!
The politicians calling for higher taxes almost always have donated $$$ to private charities and their foundations over the years (very generous!)
They could choose to donate to public charities instead (federal and state government) but don't?
Why not?
Because Americans understand where money is well spent.
Donations to the government, cumulative since 1843, about $70 million.
Donations to private charities about $10 trillion.
The media doesn't want you to know this, but if you're a guilt-ridden rich guy who thinks the rich should pay more in taxes...you can just send all your money to the government!
Yes, really.
The Bureau of Fiscal Service has a voluntary account since 1843, and you can hand over all your earthly belongings to Uncle Sam if you feel they can do more with your money than you can.
Think we should all pay more taxes? Then you get to go first.
(Scott Kirby is worth ~$100M).
