I’ve been subscribed to Stratechery since May 2018. Probably my first ever paid newsletter sub. Definitely the one I read (or in recent years, listen to) most. I’m embarrassed how often I ingest Ben Thompson Thought, and immediately feel “ok, that’s my opinion now”. Perhaps Ben is also partly to blame for my getting so giddy on tech co strategy that I took my first job at Stripe: Corporate Strategy (where we all thought Ben is the 🐐). Stripe is the “platform of platforms” (2020), and Ben is the strategist’s strategist. I’m honored he has given Stripe the privilege of furthering his work. Thank you, Ben!
I always intended Stratechery to have a sponsorship component; it just took me 12 years to get back to it. That I could do so with the company that made the subscription business possible makes me so happy. There is nothing better than endorsing a product you whole-heartedly believe in.

When you acquire a founder and let them rip, you hope they continue to "wake up like this". Obsessed!
Current obsession: Waking up every day and thinking how agents interact with Stripe Treasury.

Ever wished you could have your live Stripe data in your own database? Now you can! No more hacky crons or manual scripts. Give @stripe a spot to sync in your DB andddd... you're done!
New: sync real-time Stripe data to Postgres with Stripe Data Pipeline. Stream payment, customer, and subscription details to your application’s database. Use live data to manage feature access, fulfill orders, and keep account details current.

10. Answer the question: How does this beat Claude? It’s what people default to. Your moat is context: your product’s functionality, your users’ data, and the tools and skills you’ve built.

7. Watch for customers rebuilding your product with AI. This reveals what features they actually want. When one of our largest customers built their own prototype of “PostHog 2.0” with our MCP and Claude Code, we knew we needed to add more customizable “canvas” artifacts to PostHog.

5. Rather than asking “how do we add AI to this?” ask “what is the agent-first version of this?” Doing this forces you to rethink the jobs to be done for an agent-first future and helps you avoid being disrupted by an AI-native competitor.

Clever!
introducing FindMyWifePhoneâ„ąïž my latest shortcut squarely placed on the pareto frontier. there is no easier & cheaper way to find your wife's phone. "honey, do you know where my phone is?" the fuck I dont! "can you call me?!" she keeps her phone on silent. so i made this shortcut to help. trigger = i send her a text with !ping in it action = hey phone sets a timer for 1s timer always works, we like to keep our phones on silent + dnd and we dont use apple watches. so finding each other's phones used to be a challenge. we both have this set up in reverse, and its worked well. bonus shortcut = button in home screen widget to send !ping to my wife (we also have one called !awaken which disables silent, sets volume to max & disables do not disturb in case of emergency)

Grok Bot vs Muse @elonmusk on Grok @Bot: “You can simply drop a picture of your credit card into the chat”. I can confirm: I dropped a screenshot of a virtual card into Grok @Bot, and it went ahead and made the purchase! No PCI worries expressed by Grok, or harness restrictions. (It didn’t save card for future, though; that requires typing the card # manually into a form in grok bot.) @Muse is clear: do not paste raw credit card # into the chat. If you do, it’s trained to refuse to type that into the credit card field at checkout. “Typing anything into that card field is the exact action I can't do.” (Instead: link your @link account once, and Muse can buy things in future.)
Get your breakfast with @Muse and pay safely with Link đŸ„. Your payment details are never exposed to the agent or the business.

I'd expand the moats left to: - Proprietary data or content: data nobody else has, or unique content you can create - Network effects / community: users make it more valuable for each other - Audience / distribution: you can get attention on demand - Physical component: hardware, locations, real-world operations - Capital: owning assets and investing (esp into the AI companies as they are and will suck up large parts of the economy) - Regulatory: licenses and legal barriers
Technical moats are mostly over at this point. If you’re building something that is meant to be durable, the only moats now are: ‱ Proprietary data ‱ Network effects ‱ A physical component

Coming soon (tomorrow!) — BUILT TO GROW, our field guide to creating excellent sales orgs, by the inimitable @she_travels. I have a bunch of these taking up way too much space in our storage rooms. Would love to make some house calls this week to SF startups who are building their sales teams. Email me (in bio!). And let me know if you’re a @stripe user!

I basically just throw a task to codex on my phone whenever i think it. No need for a backlog or issues board since we have unlimited intelligence that can immediately implement any idea. Then 10-15 min later the app has the update on my phone.

Thanks Derek for the anecdote. I didn’t know Henri or Max (and others in Privy) before the acquisition, but yes - I’m inspired by their focus and grind since joining Stripe. So glad they’re here. And now Henri leading Stripe Crypto!
Henri is just different. Most founders (myself included) take their feet of the gas somewhat after getting acquired, but the fact that this guy goes extra hard AFTER the acquisition is just mind-boggling to me. I remember negotiating a contract with Henri at some point after they were acquired, and we (ZeroDev/Offchain) wanted to charge Privy/Stripe a little more. And in my head I was like dude you are part of Stripe now, this money is peanuts and it's not even your company, no way you care. And yet this guy negotiated super hard and ended up with a super good deal for them. And I was so confused why he still tried so hard. And this seems true for a few other Privy people I've talked to since the acquisition as well, such as @segall_max. Privy and the culture they built honestly need to be studied.

On Bridge & Privy: “There is a certain kind of crypto nativity & way of working in the crypto world that is different to the world that we came from.” “Folks on those teams are crypto native in a way that would be hard to get there that quickly at Stripe, & they've injected a lot of that crypto nativity into the Stripe culture.”

Token usage on subscription vs credits. Again, I'm glad subscriptions exist. Pay-as-you-go credits seems so much more expensive. Tonight: On ChatGPT $200/mo plan, doing a bit of personal coding this evening. A few threads going with Astra. nothing hectic. Glanced at my weekly limit: 0%, what? Oh wow – I'd hit my weekly limit, and it switched over to using credits: 35,000 credits in past ~day (it would cost $1,400 to buy back 35,000 credits). I hit "reset" (one of my three resets available) to reset my weekly limit, and return to using my subscription. ~3 hours later, I'm down to 59% of my weekly limit again. đŸ«  So just now, I've switched all Codex threads from 6-Astra-med to 6.1-Sol-med. I have Claude supervising Codex tonight (Codex is doing the work, Opus 5.5 is adversarial and advising). I just asked Claude to keep an eye on token use (e.g., retire long threads, start afresh). Similar story last May: it took work to run down my $200 usage, so I bought $200 of credits to keep going. "Aaaaaand they're gone!" in a fraction of the time. I'm not even mad - this time when I run out of codex resets, I'll happily be upgrading to the $500 plan. Clankers are cranking out some good shit in fairness.

100s of developers reached out for this @link + agent identity API. If you'd like to be bumped up the waitlist to try it, please send your use case (in ~5 bullets, if you can) to [email protected].
🆕 We now have a way for businesses to _prove_ an agent is acting on behalf of a verified @link user. This unlocks sites and services to more safely offer content, APIs, products, or anything else to agents. Wanna play with this new API and give feedback? Reach out. đŸ€–đŸ”Žâœ…

Bummer I won’t be in town, but RTing because others should Carpe Greg!
I'm headed to San Francisco next week. First trip away since my son was born two months ago! My life right now is 3am feedings, a toddler running around, and building in the gaps. Nap time is my new deep work block. So when I say I'm excited to sit at a dinner table and have a full conversation with adults about AI agents and startup ideas without anyone throwing food at me, I mean it. I'll be in town for a few days. If you're building something interesting, I'd love to buy you dinner and hear about it. Who wants to hang out in SF?

Pocahontas introduced me to the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus, when she sang, "You can't step in the same river twice; the water's always changing, always flowinggggg
" Well, you can't wake up to the same Stripe twice. The code is always changing, PRs closing
Stripe is constantly evolving. We want to have continuous deployment of our api. We want to be able to react to feedback from users multiple times per day. Obviously AI is making us even faster at shipping (new features products)
but what about reliability? "Everyone in the industry looks to Stripe as the company that sets the bar for reliability", says @bcherny (creator of Claude Code). Today, Stripe boasts 99.9995% uptime for core APIs. The good news is: it's now possible to build new observability, new harnesses, and new kinds of automated scrutiny. @PatrickC says he reckons "AI, on net, will make Stripe quite a bit more reliable." 😼 The full interview, with gems like "shower thoughts get translated to actual existence; I think the returns to being curious have gotten much higher" and predictions for when agent↔agent transactions will be the majority of online payments, is on youtube.com/watch?v=S_lzYIvt
