Good morning friends 🤍🍂 I’m off to Copenhagen today, as this work from my “1 in 8” cancer treatment series has been chosen to be part of the prestigious juried exhibition Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling (The Artists’ Autumn Exhibition) at the Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art in Copenhagen🤍🙏🏼 This is one of the 3 state-supported open-submission shows in Denmark, which is notoriously difficult to get accepted for, so this is a pretty huge deal. The work, titled “The summer I wasn’t there” might look like nothing in particular - but for me it represented everything about that year. Being shocked, thrown into cycles of surgery, uncertainty, healing, waiting, chemo, radiotherapy etc. Having to leave my garden unattended for months (gardening is one of my creative outlets) because I was not allowed to lift more than 1kg, and was constantly tired or at the hospital, was just a small thing in the big scheme of things. But the title of this work likewise refer to the fact that I was navigating all this without properly feeling everything that was going on. I was there, but also I wasn’t. I held myself together, for me, for my daughters, for my husband, mother, and brother…. One day at a time, with the focus on every bit of good news, and a deadline for end of treatment half a year away. The exhibition opening is this Saturday, November 7th, and running until November 28th
