It’s a week for anniversaries! On September 9, 2004, we premiered our musical adaptation of #TheColorPurple at the Alliance Theater in Atlanta. It was an incredible honor and experience, made possible by so many artists, many of whom have become lifelong friends and colleagues.
To name just a few from the Purple village, my gratitude goes out to Alice Walker, Allee Willis, Brenda Russell, Marsha Norman, Gary Griffin, Scott Sanders, Paul Tazewell, Linda Twine, Jonathan Tunick, Tanya Barfield, LaChanze, Adriane Lenox, Felicia P. Fields, Saycon Sengbloh...
I was having a productive day, doing some writing & the usual post holiday catch up stuff & then someone said to me - you know today is the 60th #StarTrekDay! - and everything got even better! Like I’d just had a sip of Saurian Brandy.

Baby Love has always been close to my heart.
Partly because it was a track made completely at home in the East Village, and partly because it was made with a close circle of friends.
My good pal @pescopaul laid down hooky guitars, and I managed to convince the great @DavidSanborn to play a solo. I recorded, mixed, and remixed it with Michael Hutchinson, a fabulous engineer and wonderful man I’d met through Jellybean.
Michael is sadly no longer with us, and the original tapes are gone, too, so we’ve rebuilt everything, down to the last magic harp arpeggio. For kicks, @reginarofficial and I included the 8-track demo version done five floors up on St. Mark’s Place. Enjoy! lnk.to/babyloveremixes

Excited that Ypsilanti is honoring the man looking at me with that “Why can’t you play it the way I asked you to?” look on his face. Morris Lawrence, Jr., was a genius musician and educator, and my first and best music mentor.

This photo of him was taken by my brother back in the early 70s, so I was lucky to have him tacked up on the bedroom wall with my other music heroes.
Back in the 90s, I got to spend time showing him how to record his ideas on a Mac computer. Watching his effortless genius up close was an experience I’ll never forget, and I am eternally grateful.
