Every walk contains its ghosts.
Someone repeatedly encountered during lockdown became part of our remembered landscape, then disappeared.
“Blessings on her… her devotion to herons, and to morning light.”

How can we resist the language of targets, management & perpetual busyness, or find alternative ways of seeing?

Don Valley to Wardsend Cemetery.
Pylons & landfill gulls to bees hanging from ragwort.
Have You Always Been Here? maps an unofficial Sheffield often absent from media but rich in life.

No expertise required.
Just curiosity.
Have You Always Been Here? invites readers to slow down and notice the overlooked details that quietly shape our lives.

Have You Always Been Here?
A question addressed to landscape, memory, birdsong, trees, silence, and perhaps even a more care-attentive part of the self.

How do we reconnect with the living world when so much of modern life keeps us indoors, online, & fixed to screens?
This sequence follows paths through river valleys, reservoir perimeters, & overlooked spaces where attention becomes a form of belonging.

Written during and after the pandemic, these poems begin with confinement and move towards attention, encounter and belonging.
Not a book about escape, but about learning to be present.

From Eyes Front: Have You Always Been Here?
Wringing each other –
two sky-blue hospital gloves
peeled off in the road.
Early-morning mist:
no view of the Casino
and no hills beyond.
A dip into chill –
a fallen leaf has twisted
to a clinch of frost.

My poems. My partner's illustrations. They helped us through Covid. Longbarrow Press turned them into three beautiful pamphlets. We're small. No marketing. If they sell, Longbarrow can publish more poets. Share this post and you'll be helping more than us.

For two years of lockdowns, my partner and I walked Sheffield's Rivelin Valley at dawn.
Moss. Herons. Froglets. Treecreepers.
Those walks became three poetry pamphlets and a way of paying attention again.

During Covid lockdowns my partner and I started taking our daily exercise along Sheffield’s Rivelin valley early in the morning – from 6am to 8.30am. On our walks, we paid attention to life around us – to small creatures, insects and birds.
