consensus is hard, not just for computers
the real challenge for interoperability is the human communication (and ego), technical part is an implementation detail
How do we “out-cooperate” — as @gregory_landua would say — the competition, for the greater good of planetary regeneration?

Anytime I go abroad, I’m annoyed that America doesn’t force us as kids to learn multiple languages and teach it in a way that matters, not by memorizing words for a test.
Speaking 2 languages is basic around the world.

Carbon Fact of the Week: #47
That’s where the US #military would fall on the list of CO2 emissions by nation-state, if it was one.
With 1.2 billion tons of #GHG emissions since 2001, the #Pentagon alone is responsible for over half of the US government’s…lnkd.in/gTaggkbY

No one has an obligation to help you
This was hard for me to accept early on when I went to my past colleagues, mentors & friends for money, advice or time
Many helped, but many didn’t
It’s not personal tho, everyone has things going on. Your most important thing is not theirs

Our plan is to do these rounds every 2 years so that existing shareholders (current & former team members + investors) can sell shares (or buy more).
This allows us to plan long-term, but also give team members who want to pay off debt, buy houses, etc a path to liquidity now.

AngelList helped us put together a roll-up vehicle (RUV) that combined money from 48 individual investors into a single entity that purchased shares from team members who wanted to sell.
The oversubscribed deal valued ConvertKit at $200M & 3.2% of the company changed hands.

Equity
Having real ownership in a successful company is the best way to build wealth. But it can also completely fail.
I’ve been on both sides.
ConvertKit equity is 95% of my net worth, but an early startup I worked at failed and I ended up getting a payout for $0.68.

Profit Sharing
We want everyone in the company to make decisions as if they are spending their own money—because they are.
52% of the profit in the company is paid directly to the team. It’s important that it’s more than half.
8% goes in a bonus pool for execs & 40% to owners

Enter the ConvertKit Model of Compensation:
You need a well rounded approach to compensation.
That’s where our quadrants come in: covering short-term vs long-term and guaranteed vs performance based.

In the last 5 years, we’ve paid $3.9 million in profit sharing to the ConvertKit team.
While most companies hope to return money to shareholders in a moonshot acquisition, we’ve created a unique model to help our team think like owners.
Here’s how our compensation model works:
