Dick Whittington’s influence at Leadenhall 💬
In 1408 the former Lord Mayor Richard ‘Dick’ Whittington acquired the lease of the Leaden Hall building, and then the site in 1411, gifting it to the City; City of London Corporation have been running it ever since.
🐟 🍗 It quickly became one of the best places in London to buy eggs, meat, game, grain, poultry and fish. The meat and fish market occupied a series of courts behind the grand lead-roofed mansion of Leadenhall Market on Leadenhall Street.
Did you know? This summer, Leadenhall Market has returned to its roots as a trading ground, but instead of selling meat, poultry and game, stalls have been filled with furniture, fashion and crafts across selected weekends.

Pepys Day 2024 Guided tour at Leadenhall Market 👣
Join us for a special walk-through history next Friday 6th September!
In September 1666 the Great Fire of London swept through the City. Man-about-town Samuel Pepys witnessed and recorded the events of that extraordinary week.
The tours, with an official City of London Guide, will include much about him, his life and exploits and the times in which he lived as well as key moments from the Great Fire.
There are two different routes, both starting from the Monument on Fish Street Hill and ending inside the Mansion House where visitors will be met by the Lord Mayor, Michael Mainelli and the Lady Mayoress as we all raise a toast to Pepys and his Diary.
Tours will leave at 10-minute intervals starting at 10.00am with the last departure at 10.41 am. Tickets cost £15 plus booking fee.
Proceeds will go to the Lord Mayor's Appeal which supports charity partners focused on mental health, homelessness, and numeracy.

Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing fascinating facts about the rich history of Leadenhall Market! 💬
Today, we’re taking you back to the 1st Century AD, when the Romans began their conquest of Britannia. The first Forum at Leadenhall dates from about 70AD, but was rebuilt in around 100 AD to be the largest Basilica Forum north of the Alps! Its Basilica, which was the most important civic building in a Roman town, was the largest outside Italy.
