3 Ways to Create a Culture of Gratitude by @LainieRowell georgecouros.substack.com/p/…

One of the greatest responsibilities of a school leader isn’t just improving instruction. It’s building a culture where people genuinely want to come to work each day.
I read a powerful piece by Lainie Rowell about creating a culture of gratitude, and it reminded me of something I’ve seen throughout my career. People rarely leave places where they feel seen, valued, and appreciated.
Three ideas stood out:
Notice the good.
As leaders, we have to intentionally look for what’s going right. Research suggests relationships thrive when positive feedback outweighs correction. Imagine the impact if every educator, student, and staff member consistently heard authentic, specific appreciation for the difference they make.
Make gratitude a habit.
School culture isn’t built through one big event. It’s built through small, consistent actions every day. A handwritten note. A positive phone call home. A quick shout-out during a staff meeting. Those moments may seem small, but over time they become the foundation of a thriving culture.
Lead with gratitude every day.
Gratitude isn’t something we reserve for Teacher Appreciation Week or the holidays. It becomes part of who we are. When leaders model appreciation first, it spreads throughout the building, creating stronger relationships, greater resilience, and a deeper sense of belonging.
At Quist, we often say, “Every Student, Every Day, Whatever It Takes!” That mindset doesn’t only apply to students. It applies to the incredible adults who pour their hearts into this work every single day.
A simple “thank you,” a handwritten note, or taking a moment to recognize someone’s effort may be exactly what they needed to keep going.
Who is someone in your life that deserves a sincere thank you today? Reach out and let them know. You may never fully realize the impact those few words can have.
