Gift link to my piece in today's @WSJFreeEx abt WHY we are overscheduling our kids. It boils down to investing. We've been told to invest in our kids the way we'd invest in employee development, to build their human capital. Something free--like free play, or walking to the store--is assumed to be less valuable than something you buy, like lessons. But some things that are FREE and invisible--independence and play--are as crucial to kids as AIR (also free and invisible)! wsj.com/opinion/free-express… @BandeljNina @michspieg @JonHaidt @LetGrowOrg

People are keen to blame anyone but themselves for the fact that recreational reading is in its death throes. The awful truth is that we were born into the most literate era in history, we had access to all the world's knowledge, and we willingly gave it up.
Everyone blames screens for the decline of reading. Nobody blames the consolidated corporate publishing industry that made books pricier, more generic, and harder to find. jacobin.com/2026/10/books-pu…

It began as a flicker of curiosity during a team meeting. We were discussing how, in many states, basically anyone can open a private school. One of our editors asked: What if ProPublica tried to establish a private school? propublica.org/article/propu…

I can’t stress enough that this would mean the complete extinction of human culture. You need art because it connects you to all who’ve gone before you; it challenges you to embrace perspectives not your own. Media generated to your exact preferences is the death of the soul.

In July, I traveled to Indiana to attend the NFL Flag Championships—a mammoth, 350-team youth flag football tournament—to see for myself a sport that is growing explosively among girls thanks to NFL investment. I was blown away by what I found. Gift link: bloomberg.com/news/features/…

This sounds hyperbolic but I’m convinced that reading physical books, and using pencil/paper for learning might be the only way to save civilization.
Evidence on the harmful cognitive effects of TikTok, Reels, and other short form video keeps growing. It's not just the content, it's the attention fragmentation and the declining ability to plan for the future. From @juliejargon wsj.com/tech/personal-tech/t…

What do we lose when we delegate too much of our work to AI? I spoke with Michelle Peng at Charter for @TIME about something I heard again and again while researching Artificial Intimacy: across professions, there is a real concern that the next generation may lose the “heartbeat of the work”—the learning, judgment, engagement, and sense of ownership that come from doing the work yourself. We ask AI to be empowering, but it can also be deskilling! time.com/partner-content/cha…

One of the more disturbing elements of the world of Fahrenheit 451 is that the classics still exist, they’ve just been wholly rewritten to remove anything that makes them interesting or challenging. Our addiction to a fully frictionless existence is going to kill us.

Last week, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation requiring large businesses to try to connect you with a human within 15 minutes of asking, or schedule a callback—taking effect in 2027. It's part of a wave of state measures targeting the administrative and financial burden of the "annoyance economy.”
