The standard algorithms certainly have their place in math and what we teach…their efficiency led them to become the standard algorithms…but there is SO much more amazing stuff throughout the math curriculum than *just* the algorithms!
My response to comments saying "Just teach the algorithm!"

Creativity is important to all professions, but especially teaching. Nurturing student creativity is only half the story. Encouraging teachers to also be creative in their own work is essential for dealing with the myriad complexities of teaching. edw.link/thrivenowcreativity

Great discussion about the value math teachers add IRL that AI still isn’t able to replicate. The art of teaching/learning math is filled with important micromoments that are easily overlooked but extend far beyond modeling proper techniques and accurate mathematical solutions.
🌴 I wrote about ChatGPT and the three hurdles it would have to clear before we could call it transformative for teaching. danmeyer.substack.com/p/thre…

If you don't have all the facts yet, you shouldn't have a strong opinion yet. Motivated reasoning is believing what you want to be true. Critical thinking depends on wanting to believe whatever ends up being true. A key to learning is refusing to let your hopes bias your views.

The ultimate test of success is not whether you're proud of what you've achieved. It's whether you're proud of who you've become. Accomplishments highlight your skills. Relationships reveal your values. If excellence is what you do, character is what you do for others.

"I was under pressure" is not an excuse for toxic behavior. Being stressed doesn't justify hostility. It's not your responsibility to absorb their pain. Being busy doesn't license incivility. No one's calendar is too full to be respectful. Most acts of kindness cost nothing.

An interesting read to help contextualize risk, and understand why quantifying risk is so difficult with respect to COVID. Yell about masks, freedoms, schools, politics, but risk is central to individual positions on any of these. #ThinkingQuantitatively yourlocalepidemiologist.subs…

This.
This seemingly never-ending pandemic is not easy on anyone. Cut people some slack. It's probably not personal. Cut yourself some slack. You're trying your best. Cement these habits now and you will learn how to be more forgiving of others and yourself for years to come.

Great minds don’t think alike. They challenge each other to think differently. The people who teach you the most are the ones who share your principles but not your thought processes. Converging values draw you to similar questions. Diverging views introduce you to new answers.

I had a student say "I know it cancels, but I don't know if it cancels to 0 or 1." This reminded me of why precision in language is important. That's why I say "creates a zero pair" or "simplifies to 1" instead.
