We haven’t started to grapple with the fact that there was a terror attack targeting Jews in Canada this week that would have been a massacre but for police guarding the synagogue. Years of failed leadership have led to the normalization of antisemitism on both the left and right
Progressive antizionists have a difficult time accepting that Neo-Nazis and other extremists on the right hate Israel as much as they do.
The two are joined in the same movement against Jews everywhere, and each arm of the horseshoe supports and accelerates the other.
As reporting continues into this week’s antisemitic shooting attack targeting a synagogue in Belleville, a picture is emerging of the suspect as a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces who spread anti-COVID vaccine conspiracy theories as well as violent antisemitic and anti-immigration messages.
Despite a lack of initial information, @CIJAinfo recklessly rushed to blame this violent attack on critics of Israel, anti-Zionists, and the Liberal government’s foreign policy approach to Israel, without any evidence that the incident had anything to do with the Middle East.
This smear campaign put the blame on NDP leader Avi Lewis for his comments on Israel’s genocide in Gaza, with CIJA charging that “Libels have consequences.” CIJA also blamed the Liberal government’s positions in support of a Palestinian state and ICC arrest warrants against Netanyahu, saying that this “gives extremists a green light to target Canadians.” And CIJA argued that it was anti-Zionism that was “driving violence against Canadians.”
Even yesterday, after further information has been reported by CBC and Global about the likely far-right motivation of the suspect (although this has not yet been confirmed by police), CIJA has continued to put blame on “government policies and rhetoric targeting Israel,” saying that “criticism of Israeli policies” is fueling “radicalization, antisemitism and violence.”
This is completely unacceptable. CIJA’s statements have deflected attention away from the actual sources of this attempted mass casualty attack, and are instead trying to pin the incident on Canadians who are concerned about Palestinian human rights, as well as policy decisions that support Palestine.
CIJA should do the right thing and issue an apology to those who have been baselessly linked to this violent extremist attack.

On Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year, many small congregations cannot accommodate the number of people who come to pray, so they rent larger spaces for synagogue services.
That's why Neil Herland was worshipping at The Meridien Arts Center, where the Song Shul congregation was holding its synagogue services.
What Herland posted was exactly accurate, while this @CJPME post is either egregiously ignorant or willfully dishonest.
CJPME filed a formal complaint concerning public posts made on X by @CBC National Radio News Reader @NEWSneil Neil Herland.
Herland posted a thread where he falsely claimed that he was blocked from a synagogue service by Palestine solidarity protesters. However, Herland was on his way to the Meridian Arts Centre, not a synogogue, to see Mark Regev. Regev is a former Israeli ambassador who has served in multiple high-ranking positions in the Israeli government, including as the Prime Minister's Senior Advisor for Foreign Affairs and International Communications and the International Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office.
This narrative was fundamentally misleading to an extent that it appears to be deliberate, resulting in disinformation that defames pro-Palestinian activists.
These are clear breaches of the Journalistic Standards and Practices. CJPME demands that the CBC Ombud initiate a formal review into Mr. Herland’s conduct, that he be directed to delete the thread, issue a formal retraction regarding his false characterization of the event, and abide strictly by the CBC’s social media guidelines in all future public communications.
Avi Lewis needs to lie about what he said for the same reason that Olivia Chow needs to avoid debating or defending what she has said:
Their words are indefensible. And that's because the ideology they represent is indefensible.
