Thrilled to win the prestigious Sigma Delta Chi award for excellence in sports reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists! “Mismanagement of the Year” exposed widespread waste & mismanagement among nonprofits founded by Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award winners — some of which spend less than 50¢ of every $1 on actual charity. But it also cited notable success stories like @JJWatt (99¢ of every $1 to charity), @LarryFitzgerald (fiscal sponsor provides 501c3 support for a small fee) & @EliManning (partnered directly with a hospital). It outlined best practices via @CWTips & other experts. And it presented possible solutions to longstanding issues, which should include better nonprofit education & vetting from the @NFL & @NFLPA. The series inspired former #WPMOY @AnquanBoldin to cofound @SportForImpact to educate athletes & their families about responsible sports philanthropy. It has support of NFL VP @TroyVincentSr, a former #WPMOY himself. “We can all do more to better educate,” he said, “for sure.” 🙌 @spj_tweets @azcentral spj.org/sdxa23.asp

GROOT

Can’t tell you the last time I watched ESPN for anything other than a live game & this ignorant, inhumane carnival barker routine is among the reasons.

Matthew Mayich was on life support for 41 days & his teammates had to hire a lawyer to contradict the school’s preliminary findings before ASU put its head hockey coach on paid leave.

Seven Arizona State University hockey players who were on the field when their teammate collapsed during an Aug. 20 workout say the narrative of events put out by coaches, staff & administrators does not reflect "the cruelty & incompetency" of what happened.
