Alaska’s Midnight Sun Hotshots put in a busy 2026 fire season, working fires across Alaska before heading south to support a busy fire season in the Lower 48. The crew responded to multiple fires in Alaska before taking assignments in Oregon and Washington. They also returned to Alaska to support the Mukluk Fire in Tok before heading south for one final assignment on the Deep Creek Fire in Oregon. From the Far North to the Pacific Northwest, Midnight Sun spent the season putting their skills to work wherever they were needed.

Still going strong after more than a century. @USBR's oldest operating hydropower facility began generating electricity at Idaho’s Minidoka Dam in 1909. Today, its two powerhouses can generate 28 megawatts of electricity. 117 years later, that’s dam impressive.

Fall is bulking season. As winter approaches, black bears at Shenandoah National Park are busy packing on the pounds. Acorns are a favorite fall food, providing a calorie-rich feast that helps bears build fat reserves before heading to their dens. Bulk. Nap. Repeat.

When you find a good back scratcher, you stick with it. Brown bears at Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve use “rub trees,” leaving behind hair and scent as they rub against the bark. Bears may return to the same trees again and again. Trail camera video by NPS

National Wildlife Refuge Week has an official greeter. Welcome to Montezuma, where this snapping turtle appears to be personally checking in visitors. Come for the wildlife. Stay because the greeter is blocking the road.

You can’t stop an earthquake. But science can give you a head start. The @USGS ShakeAlert system rapidly detects earthquakes, allowing alerts to reach some people before strong shaking arrives and helping protect critical infrastructure. Photo from the 1964 Alaskan earthquake by USGS

Built in 1902 from massive stones, Boulder Bridge was designed to blend into the surrounding landscape. More than 120 years later, framed by fall leaves, it remains one of @RockCreekNPS's most recognizable landmarks.

We do love a good sea story, and this one’s a classic. ⚓️ Thanks for sharing a little Navy history, @Interior!
Happy 251st birthday to the @USNavy. Now sit down, kids. It’s story time. You’ve probably seen the famous flag: “DONT GIVE UP THE SHIP.” But do you know the story behind it?

Those words belonged to Navy Captain James Lawrence, who was mortally wounded aboard the USS Chesapeake during the War of 1812. His dying words to his crew became a rallying cry. “DONT GIVE UP THE SHIP.”

Months later, Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry carried his friend’s words into the Battle of Lake Erie on a battle flag. Perry and his crew defeated the British fleet and the DONT GIVE UP THE SHIP flag remains one of the most enduring symbols in U.S. Navy history. These stories live on at @PerrysVIPM.
