🚨 THIS IS A POLITICAL WATERSHED Former chancellor Rachel Reeves has declared: β€œBritain’s future lies in the European Union.” Reeves helped write Labour’s 2024 manifesto, which ruled out EU membership. She now says Brexit has made Britain β€œpoorer, weaker and less secure” and explicitly welcomes Andy Burnham’s leadership in reopening the debate. Full EU membership is now one of the options being considered by the prime minister, alongside the Single Market and Customs Union. This is no longer a fringe chat. It is taking place at the very top of government, ahead of the crucial UK–EU summit on November 20. Britain cannot repair the damage of Brexit through tiny technical adjustments. We need the courage to confront what Brexit has done to our economy, security, food system and international influence. The argument for rejoining has begun and this time we must win it. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί

America’s midterms are not merely domestic housekeeping; they are the planet’s last chance to see whether a nation that once claimed moral leadership still has the spine to discipline its own most dangerous recidivist. Should it flinch, the world will never forget.

In 1987, Patrick Stewart refused to unpack his suitcase for six straight weeks. My throat still tightens every time I read why. Every Hollywood insider told the 47-year-old British stage actor that Star Trek: The Next Generation would be a disaster. Even his closest friend, Ian McKellen, begged him not to throw away his Shakespearean career on a television gamble. Stewart kept his bags packed by the door, waiting to be fired and sent home to London. That "six-week failure" lasted 36 years. Watching him late at night here in Japan, we saw something Hollywood never expected. In Japan, we call this quiet, unbreakable spirit "Fudoshin," an immovable heart under fire. Most action heroes scream and fire weapons to look strong. Captain Picard never needed to raise his voice. Born into deep poverty in Yorkshire, terrified of a violent home, he left school at age 15 and lost all his hair by 19, convinced his life as an actor was over before it began. Yet one English teacher, Cecil Dormand, handed that frightened 12-year-old boy a copy of Shakespeare, said "Read it out loud," and secretly paid for his first drama course. Never forget what happened decades later. On the morning Queen Elizabeth II knighted him as Sir Patrick Stewart, he invited that same retired schoolteacher to sit beside him at his knighthood luncheon. No suitcase left unpacked. No rage on the bridge. Just a cup of Earl Grey tea, a tug of his uniform, and three quiet words that commanded the galaxy: "Make it so." He passed away at 86 surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, and laughter. And this December, in Avengers: Doomsday, Professor X will grace the screen one final time. A boy who thought he wouldn't last six weeks in Hollywood gave the world an eternity of nobility. From Japan, with tears and our deepest salute: Thank you, Captain. Engage. βœ¨πŸ––πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅

That’s 65% Join the European Union 35% Stay out When you remove don’t know, wouldn’t vote etc. Commentators of course will charge (and fairly) that this may change a lot depending on clarifications and conditions of joining… However, there’s no doubting that the country is shifting hugely in mood around our relationship with our European family- and there’s a large majority which doesn’t like the Brexit box that we are in.
New from @Ipsos_in_the_UK How would you vote if there was a referendum on the UK applying to join the EU? Should apply to join 56% Should stay out 30%

The BBC says they give Reform wall-to-wall coverage β€˜because of their position in opinion polls’. Presumably they’ll now very significantly reduce the platforming given that Reform is tanking in the polls? I hope Zia Yusuf hasn’t been booked too far ahead for Question Time?

Starmer says the UK must get closer to Europe as our US relationship changes. The shift in dealings with Washington is not likely to reset once Trump leaves the Oval Office. He added that Brexit had done β€œdeep damage” to the UK economy, and that he wanted the UK to be β€œmore ambitious”, including pursuing β€œcloser economic cooperation [and] closer security cooperation”. theguardian.com/politics/202…

Clement Attlee founded the NHS, built record numbers of council houses, nationalised Housing, Power, Rail, Energy, Steel, Fossil Fuel and employed more than 2m people in 5 years all with the greatest debt the UK had ever had. And the economy boomed and debt fell.

I remember seeing a documentary on the Star Trek for next generation Blu-ray set , part of which concerned how the cast was brought together. Apparently. Gene Roddenberry was against the idea of Patrick Stewart playing Picard because because he was a bald Englishman, and Picard was envisioned as being more obviously French and having hair. In fact, I think they tried giving Patrick a hairpiece at one stage, but that wasn't successful Eventually, though, Roddenberry was persuaded and we got the Picard we know and love as a result. And now, thinking about it, I can't imagine anyone else being able to play that particular role with the same gravitas as Patrick Stewart did. Picard became an iconic character BECAUSE of how well Patrick portrayed him, so I am very grateful that the people in charge of casting for TNG 40 years ago eventually surely came to the decision they did.

Anyone who believes in the NHS, maternity care, social care, pensions, libraries, childcare, good education for all is a socialist.
Patrick Stewart talks about Clement Attlee (best ever UK PM) winning when he was 5 and how he has been a Socialist ever since. Which terrifies Americans.

Our unemployment rate is 4.7%. Anything under 5% is defined as full employment by the governments own definition. The benefits bill isn't spiralling out of control. They are creating a moral outrage over absolutely nothing. We are in a period of full employment.

Margaret Thatcher replaced Domestic Rates with Council Tax. Under Domestic Rates if your house was worth 100x the average you paid 100x the average. Under Council Tax it is capped at 3x, so people in Castle's pay little more than you. Tax the rich, bring back Domestic Rates.
